Third baseman Mike Lorenzo singled home shortstop Dominic Ramos in the bottom of the tenth inning as the Madison Mallards won their second in a row over the Waterloo Bucks, 5-4 in ten innings.
Bernie Minjares pitched the tenth inning for the Mallards to pick up the win and improve to 1-1 on the season. He gave up two hits but pitched out of the jam.
The Mallards won a seesaw battle that saw the teams tie on three separate occasions. Mike Johnston started for the Mallards and pitched well, going 7 2/3 innings and giving up four runs, though only one earned, on eight hits while walking two and striking out two.
The teams were tied for the last time at 4-4 after six innings and both teams wasted many opportunities to win before extra innings. The Bucks left on nine base runners and the Mallards left a season high 16 on base.
The hitting stars for the Mallards, who compiled 11 hits as a team, were Lorenzo and third baseman Mike Settle. Lorenzo was 3-6 with the game winning RBI and Settle was 3-5 with 2 RBI’s.
The defenses for both teams struggled, especially the Mallards, who committed four errors which led to three unearned runs. The Bucks as a team committed two errors.
The Mallards will try to keep the momentum going tomorrow night as they take on the Rochester Honkers on bobblehead night. Game time is set for 7:05pm.
