Mequon, WI – The Madison Mallards (39-28) rallied from an early four-run deficit to defeat the Lakeshore Chinooks (41-27) in 10 innings on Thursday night.
Madison struck first in the opening inning when Jonah Weathers (University of Louisville) drove in a run with an RBI double. Lakeshore answered immediately in the bottom half, taking a 2-1 lead on a two-run single from Casey Robinson (Salt Lake CC).
The Chinooks extended their advantage in the third when Nick Alred (St. Mary’s College) launched a three-run home run, making it 5-1.
The Mallards began to chip away in the fourth. Nate Novinska (University of Illinois) hit an RBI double before Brayden Zillis (Illinois State University) brought home another run with a groundout to trim the deficit to 5-3.
Brock Lulewicz (McLennan Community College) added an RBI single in the sixth to pull Madison within one, but Lakeshore answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to restore a two-run cushion at 6-4.
Madison continued its comeback in the eighth, scoring on a Chinooks error to make it 6-5. Then, down to their final three outs, Jack Bello (University of Minnesota) delivered a clutch RBI single in the ninth to even the score at 6-6.
In the 10th inning, Lulewicz grounded into a double play, but the go-ahead run crossed the plate to give the Mallards a 7-6 lead. Brayden Kottschade (Southeastern Community College) closed the door with a scoreless bottom of the 10th, securing the extra-inning victory.
Eamonn Mulhern (St. Cloud State University) earned the win with three scoreless innings of relief, lowering his ERA to 3.21. Ben Groeschl (University of Dayton) was charged with the loss, while Kottschade picked up the save.
The Mallards return home Friday night to host the Green Bay Rockers at Warner Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
