The Northwoods League has announced their 2016 All-Star teams this morning, with two Mallards being selected to the South division team. Troy Bacon (Santa Fe College) and Zach Jarrett (UNC-Charlotte) have both been named All-Stars, where they will represent the Mallards in Kenosha on July 19th.
Bacon, the 6’1,” 180-pound right-hander from Tampa, Florida, is currently tied for the league-lead in wins, despite pitching out of the bullpen. Bacon has recorded a decision in every one of his outings in 2016, going 5-2 with four saves to accompany his 2.25 ERA. Bacon has proven to be a strikeout pitcher on the season, leading the team in strikeouts despite pitching as a reliever. He has a K/9 of 14.85, a 0.95 WHIP, and leads the team with his four saves. Bacon was drafted in the 37th round of the 2016 MLB Draft last month by the Colorado Rockies.
“It's been a great honor to even be accepted into the Northwoods League this summer. It's a very prestigious league to be involved in and a lot of players out there would die for this opportunity,” said Bacon. “With that, I knew I had to come out here and bring my ‘A’ game. I'm just a junior college kid who doesn’t go to a big university, so I came here with something to prove. I love my teammates and I love the game of baseball even more, and every chance I get I'm going to put my heart and soul into the game until someone tells me I can't anymore.”
Jarrett, the 6’3,” 220-pound outfielder finds himself as the team-leader in RBIs this season. The Hickory, North Carolina, native has brought in 29 runs on the year while hitting six home runs, good for fourth in the Northwoods League and second on the team. Jarrett is hitting .271 on the season, and has been able to flash some speed to accompany the power. Jarrett has swiped three bags on the season, hit a triple, and made some spectacular running catches while patrolling either of the corner outfield positions.
“It's an honor to be able to represent the Mallards in the All-Star game,” said Jarrett. “It means a lot to me and it wouldn't have been able to happen without the support of Donnie, the other coaches, and all the guys on the team.”
The All-Star game this summer will take place at Simmons Field in Kenosha, Wisconsin, hosted by the Kenosha Kingfish. The break will last from July 18th-20th, where festivities will include the Home Run Derby on the 18th and the All-Star banquet and game taking place on the 19th.
