A two-run ninth inning erased a late deficit as the Thunder Bay Border Cats won their third game in a row.
The Border Cats emerged victorious by a 3-2 margin over the Rochester Honkers at Mayo Field on Monday, taking three of the four games in the series between the two Great Plains East division rivals.
Down to their final out, Thunder Bay’s Trey Fikes (University of Nebraska) notched a two-run base hit to give his team the lead.
John McDonald (Florida Southeastern University) earned his second win of the season on the mound, shutting down the Honkers in the bottom half.
Thunder Bay starting pitcher Ethan Minaker (Cal State University-Bakersfield) threw five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits.
The Border Cats continue their road trip with a two-game series against the Mankato MoonDogs, who lead the Great Plains East second half standings. Jackson Irwin (Bellarmine University) is the expected starting pitcher for Thunder Bay on Tuesday. The Border Cats return home to Port Arthur Stadium with a Thursday doubleheader against the Willmar Stingers, with the first game scheduled to begin at 5:05 p.m. It’s Tbaytel Night, with prizes and giveaways courtesy of Tbaytel.
