The Thunder Bay Border Cats picked up a pair of wins in one day, completing a doubleheader victory over the Willmar Stingers.
The Border Cats prevailed 7-6 in the opener, and then finished off the Thursday action at Port Arthur Stadium with a 4-3 decision in extra innings.
The games, which included Thursday’s regularly scheduled matchup along with a makeup for a first half rainout, were seven innings in length.
In the first contest, a three-run blast by Jeremy Sheffield (Georgetown University) in the fifth sparked the comeback bid as the home side rallied from a four-run deficit. Junior Lopez (Ottawa University) also drove in a pair of runs.
Carson Priebe (McLennan Community College) earned the win on the mound while Carter Wall (University of Utah) collected his third save of the season.
Caleb Watkins (Northern Oklahoma Tonkawa Community College) and Kaiden Ashton (University of Central Missouri) drove in the go-ahead runs in the eighth as the Border Cats took the nightcap.
Sheffield hit his second home run of the night, and third of the campaign, in the second game.
Tyler Talbert (University of Texas-Arlington) picked up his fourth win, throwing two-plus innings of relief to close out the game.
Sheffield and Jacob Steinberg (Belmont Abbey College) were the Cwench players of the game for the Border Cats. Cwench is the official hydration partner of the Thunder Bay Border Cats.
Thunder Bay’s overall record now stands at 30-25, and 9-12 in the second half.
The Border Cats close out their three-game slate against Willmar on Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m., and Ethan Minaker (Cal State University-Bakersfield) is expected to be the starting pitcher for Thunder Bay. It’s “Flyaway Friday” presented by Porter Airlines with one lucky fan winning two tickets for anywhere Porter flies.
