Wisconsin Rapids splits away doubleheader with the Woodchucks

The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (10-6) moved into a tie for first place in the Great Lakes West Division by splitting a doubleheader with the Wausau Woodchucks (7-9) on Sunday.

The Rafters rallied late in game one but could not come back and fell 4-2 in game one. Anthony Galason had two RBIs with a single in the seventh inning and Neil Abbatiello gets the loss with six strikeouts as the starter.

In game two, Wisconsin Rapids jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a two-RBI double by Roman Trujillo in the fourth inning. In his first game as a Rafter, Aidan Huggins hit an RBI single in the sixth and another run scored on the play to make it 4-0 Rafters.

Nathan Hemmerling pitched six shutout innings to get the win as the starter for Rapids, striking out five batters and giving up just three hits. Jimmy Borzone closed the game in the seventh to secure the Rafters’ league-best ninth shutout of the season.

The Rafters begin a crucial series with the Green Bay Booyah on Monday, with game one on the road and game two at home on Tuesday. The Rafters and Booyah are currently tied for first place in the Great Lakes West Division second-half standings.

When the team returns to Historic Witter Field on Tuesday, they will take the field for the first time as the Wisconsin Rapids Gorgeous Grandmas. The team will be offering a two-for-one ticket special as they face off against the Green Bay Booyah.
