Wausau, Wis. – The Wausau Woodchucks (6-2) offense continued showing out in front of the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (2-6) Tuesday night, claiming an 11-2 victory. It was the third straight game the Woodchucks scored 10+ runs and put them alone in first place in the subdivision. The Rafters had the lead early and saw Madden Ocko go 2-4 from the plate, but the Woodchucks late offense and pitching took charge in the end.
Wisconsin Rapids’ Ocko got things started with an RBI double off Wausau starter Zach Wyatt (3-1) in the top of the first, but the Woodchucks bit right back in the bottom of the first with a game-tying RBI single from Dom Rodriguez off Rafters starter Seth Spencer (1-4) to knot it 1-1.
In the top of the second, the Rafters reclaimed the lead on Eric Harper’s RBI single off Wausau’s Wyatt, sending home Hiroto Kobayashi to make it 2-1 Wisconsin Rapids.
While Rafters’ Spencer pitched a scoreless second, the Woodchucks took the lead 4-2 in the bottom of the third on Josh Arquette’s three-run homer.
That was followed by a few scoreless innings, but in the bottom of the sixth, the Woodchucks got to Rafters reliever Jace Barajas, putting up four straight hits capped off by Max Galvin’s three-run homer to make it 8-2.
Wisconsin Rapids’ Tony Torres relieved Barajas after the homer and worked out of the inning, but in the seventh, Wausau’s Noah Malone tagged him for two runs on a two-RBI single that extended the Woodchucks’ lead to 10-2.
Jafet Martinez then relieved Rafters’ Torres and worked through the seventh, but allowed the second homer of the night from Josh Arquette in the eighth inning which made it 11-2.
The loss was the Rafters’ fifth in a row and they’ll look to get back on the right track next game. They’ll take on the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders in a doubleheader Wednesday, hoping to snap the skid. The first game is scheduled for 12:05 P.M. while Game 2 is scheduled for 6:35 P.M. Both games will be broadcast for video on NWL+ and for radio on WFHR 97.5 FM/1320 AM.
