Wausau, WI – In another high-scoring affair, the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (3-9) were able to blast a season-best five home runs on Sunday, but it wouldn’t be enough against the Wausau Woodchucks (9-4), as the Rafters fell, 17-10. The Rafters have dropped three of their first four games this season against the Woodchucks.
The Rafters struck quickly in the first with two two-run homers from Rafters OF Zachary Gingrich and INF Harrison Engskov, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead. Wausau responded quickly with six unanswered runs, three coming in the first and the other three coming in the third. Woodchucks catcher Dylan LaPointe drove in two runs off a single in the first as he would finish the game with four runs driven in.
In the 4th, the Rafters responded and tied the game, 6-6, thanks to a two-run homer from Rafters OF Dylan Frank, his first of the season. In the bottom frame, Woodchucks infielder Dawson Harmon would clear the bases with a double, regaining Wausau the lead, 10-6. Wausau would score four in the bottom of the fourth.
In the 5th, the Rafters weren’t done, and it was Dylan Frank who smacked his second home run of the game, this time driving in three runs. At the end of the top of the 5th, the Rafters trailed 10-9. In the bottom frame, Dylan LaPointe would drive in two more runs with a single, and extended Wausau’s lead to 12-9.
Both teams would exchange a run each in the 6th, before Wausau scored four in the eighth to solidify the game. Rafters OF David Ketterman collected his first home run of the season in the sixth.
Rafters pitcher Hezekiah Scott got the nod to start, but it was Garrett McGuigan (0-1) who recorded the loss. Wausau used a handful of pitchers too, with Brady Wright recording the win and move to 3-0.
The Rafters will end their eight game road trip tomorrow with a visit to Madison before hosting the Mallards on Tuesday at Witter Field. Both first pitches are slated for 6:05pm.
