Wisconsin Rapids, WI – On Ag Day at Witter Field, the Rafters (7-16) scored first and never looked back as they defeated the Green Bay Rockers (15-9), 4-2, ending a six-game losing streak. Green Bay entered the contest winners in seven of their last 10 games and a game out of first place in the Great Lakes West.
It started in the bottom of the first when the Rafters tagged two off of Green Bay thanks to an RBI single from 1B Colin Spear and an RBI from Connor Harvie with a sacrifice fly.
Green Bay wouldn’t score their first run of the game until the 4th inning when 2B David Ballenia drove home Max Humphrey with a single, his 5th RBI of the season.
The game would remain a tight 2-1 battle until the 7th, when Rafters DH Mikey Boyd hit his first home run of the season, giving the team a much-needed insurance run. Colin Spear followed up with a solo shot to lead off the 8th, homering in back-to-back games and extending the Rafters’ lead to 4-1.
In the 9th, the Rockers would cut into the deficit when Aidan Kuni scored on a passed ball and had the game’s tying run to the plate with only one out but couldn’t score with Colton LaFave recording his first save of the season.
Rafters starter Sam Neal was phenomenal, allowing four hits and just one run in five innings, striking out six and recording his second win. The Rafters followed Gage Honeyager, who pitched 3.1 innings out of the pen. Honeyager would go all the way to the 9th, giving up an earned run and striking out three before LaFave sealed the deal.
Rockers starter JT Guerrero III collected his second loss of the season after being charged for two earned runs in six innings of work with seven strikeouts.
The series finale is set for Sunday, 1:05pm, at Witter Field.
