Wisconsin Rapids, WI – The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters (20-48) overcame their largest deficit of the season and rallied their way back from six down, to walk-off the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders (29-39) in the final home game of the summer at Historic Witter Field.
1,359 fans attended the game on Friday for Fan Appreciation Night and Postgame Fireworks.
Early in the game, it was all Dock Spiders, starting off the scoring with two runs in the 2nd inning, when OF Evan Abbott drove in two runs with a two-out single. Fond du Lac would tag three more in the third, highlighted with a two-run home run from Carter Kelley, his first of the summer.
The Dock Spiders would add one more in the 5th, jumping out to an early 6-0 advantage. In the bottom frame, the Rafters finally got on the board when DH Gunnar Dillard brought home Quinn Falish with a sac fly and gained an extra run off a Dock Spiders throwing error. In the next at-bat, Rafters SS Kedren Kinzie brought home Danny Gavin with an RBI single, cutting the deficit down to 6-3.
Trailing 6-4 in the 8th, the Rafters had the bases loaded with one out, and the Dock Spiders had to make a defensive substitution at catcher, inserting Joey Monetti. The first two pitches that Monetti saw resulted in wild pitches, allowing the Rafters to score two runs and tie the game at 6-6.
After a Blaine Davis three-up-and-three-down 9th inning, the Rafters had two runners in scoring position with one out. Catcher Connor Harvie stepped up to the plate as he did the night before. On Thursday, Harvie had a chance to walk off the Rockers and missed a game-winning home run by inches. Having another chance to play hero, Harvie redeemed himself with a base hit to left field, driving in Kedren Kinzie, as the Rafters walked off the Dock Spiders, 7-6.
It was Wisconsin Rapids’ third walk off win of the season as the team tied their largest comeback of the summer, a six-run deficit. The other time the Rafters overcame a six-run deficit was on July 22nd against the Dock Spiders in Game 1 of a double header.
Blaine Davis (2-6) logged his second win of the summer as Jaden Morris (0-2) collected his second loss of the season.
The Rafters will finish off their season Saturday at Herr-Baker Field against the Dock Spiders. First pitch is slated for 4:05pm.
