Madison 8 – Brainerd 0
Matt Morgan (Purdue) pitched eight shutout innings and Ben Long (UW-Milwaukee) went 4-for-4 as the Mallards beat the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers 8-0 at Stewart C. Mills Field Sunday. While the game featured a pitching duel between Morgan and Brainerd pitcher Joey Van Cleave (Santa Rosa Junior College) for the first seven innings, the Mallards broke open the game in the eighth and ninth innings, when they scored six combined runs to put the game out of reach.
Battle Creek 7 – Thunder Bay 3
A big 3rd inning from the Bombers’ offense was the difference Sunday afternoon, as the Battle Creek Bombers defeat the Thunder Bay Border Cats by the score 7-3. Every Bombers player came to bat in the 3rd, scoring 4 runs with 2 walks, 3 singles, and a double. In the 7th the Bombers got 4 consecutive hits, resulting in 2 insurance runs that put the game out of reach. Parker Berberet (Cypress College) led off the inning with a double, and Chris Lewis (Western Michigan), Josh Valle (Marshall), and Jimmy Tanner (USC Upstate) all hit singles, giving the Bombers a 7-3 lead. The big hitter for the night was Chris Lewis, going 3-4 with 3 singles, 1 run, and 2 RBIs. Lewis had RBI singles in both the 3rd and the 7th inning rallies.
Green Bay 4 – Rochester 0
Joel Delorit (UW-Stevens Point) and Craig Gullickson (Clemson) combined to shutout the Rochester Honkers and John Semel (Chapman) hit a home run for Green Bay, in a 4-0 win Sunday afternoon at Jones Sign Field at Joannes Stadium. Delorit (1-0) was lights out as he pitched five innings of hitless ball before giving up a single through the infield. In total, he pitched 7.0 solid innings allowing only two hits in 85 pitches. Delorit walked two batters and fanned six to pick up his first win of the season. Gullickson entered in the eighth inning and continued the Bullfrog pitching dominance, by striking out five more Honkers’ batters to earn the save. Semel led Green Bay (3-1) going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Daniel Torrente (Missouri St.) and Tony Jandron (St. Norbert) each added a RBI of their own. Matt Mullendore (Hamline) took the loss on the hill for Rochester (2-1) giving up eight hits and four earned runs in 8.0 innings of work. Green Bay recorded six of its eight hits against Mullendore in a combined two innings.
Waterloo 11 – Duluth 2
Waterloo got the bats out Sunday afternoon, hammering Duluth pitching for 11 runs on 18 hits in an 11-2 Northwoods League intra-divisional win at Riverfront Stadium. A crowd of better than 1,500 was treated to runs, runs and more runs in the first three frames. The Blue, White and Gold (1-3) plated four in the first, five in the second and two in the third. Manager Pete Lauritsen’s team used the long ball during the attack with center fielder Willie Argo and left fielder Phil Keppler (Iowa) each driving out two-run shots. Designated hitter Troy White (Northern Illinois) added four hits. The offensive outburst was more than enough for Waterloo starting pitcher Corey Kimes. He went five and two-thirds, didn’t surrender an earned run and struck out five. Duluth (2-2) was led by second baseman Andy Burns (Kentucky) who was two-for-four with an RBI.
Wisconsin 4 – Mankato 3
In yet another tightly played ballgame, the Wisconsin Woodchuck’s used an RBI single in the bottom of the tenth inning to defeat the Mankato MoonDogs 4-3 Sunday evening in Wausau. Tony Frazier drove in Chris Slater with a one-out single, his second hit of the game, to give the Woodchucks (1-3) their first win of the season. The MoonDogs (1-2) had tied the game in the top of the ninth, but failed to complete the comeback. Jeremy Brewer picked up the win in relief for Wisconsin, throwing two innings and allowing the MoonDog run in the ninth.
Eau Claire 4 – La Crosse 1
It did not take long for the Eau Claire Express to get back on the winning track after suffering their first loss of the season Saturday night. Sunday evening the Express defeated the La Crosse Loggers 4-1 at Copeland Stadium in La Crosse. The offense gave starting pitcher Joseph Lopez (South Mountain CC) a few runs to work with early on in the first inning. The Express scored three runs in the first inning and that was more than enough for Lopez to work with. Lopez pitched seven innings and surrendered only one run. The bullpen was solid as well. Ian Campbell (Yavapai CC) pitched the eighth inning and Devan Kline (Central Michigan) pitched a clean ninth inning to secure the win for the Express. Nolan Fadness (UW-Oshkosh), Joe Bonfe (Sierra College), Nate Baumann (Augustana) and Drew Heithoff (Augustana) all had two hits in the game.
Alexandria 4 – St. Cloud 2
The St. Cloud River Bats got their first taste of the friendly confines on Knute Nelson Stadium Sunday afternoon as Jayson Langfels (Eastern Kentucky) smacked a walk-off three-run home run off Bats reliever Kurtis Frymier (Michigan St.). Langfels, who was pinch hitting with runners on 1st & 3rd and no one out, hit a line drive into the right center gap and the ball carried just over the fence near the 345’ sign to give the Beetles the come from behind win. Drew Palen (Penn State) grabbed the loss after putting the eventual winning runs start the ninth. The River Bats have scored just two runs in three straight losses since their victory on opening night.
