Monday’s Action

Thunder Bay 9, Alexandria 1
The Thunder Bay Border Cats put up nine runs on fourteen hits against the Alexandria Beetles on Monday night.  Thunder Bay’s Jeff Deblieux (South Alabama) and Ryan Court (Illinois State) each had three hits on the night to pace the offense.  Border Cats designated hitter Ben Scheffer (Florida Tech) hit a two run homer to add to the run total.  Thunder Bay and Alexandria both sit at 2-2 during the second half of the NWL season. 

Green Bay 3, Waterloo 0
Bullfrog short-stop Brad Zapenas (Boston College) had a two run double and scored a run to give Green Bay all they needed to shutout the Waterloo Bucks 3-0.  The Bullfrogs used timely hitting to go along with a great relief outing from Joel Delorit (Wisconsin Stevens Point) who threw 7.0 innings of scoreless baseball while Ben Versnik (Wisconsin Whitewater) earned the save throwing a hitless ninth.  Phil Keppler (Iowa) was 2-for-3 in the loss. 

St. Cloud 6, Willmar 1
The River Bats jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings of play and beat the Willmar Stingers 6-1 on Monday night.  St. Cloud starting pitcher Jason Wheeler (Loyola Marymount) threw an outstanding game while only giving up one run.  The lefty threw 8.0 innings of three hit baseball while striking out seven and at one point retired 14 straight Stingers.  Joey Benke (St. Cloud State) hit a two run homer, his third of the season. 

Brainerd 9, Mankato 7
The Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers used an eight run sixth inning to beat the Mankato MoonDogs 9-7 in front of 1,612 fans.  The MoonDogs put up a fight when they came back from 9-2 with five runs in the final three frames.  The Lunkers only had five hits on the night, but Mankato gave them six unearned runs.  Vince Bruno was a perfect 2-for-2 while leadoff hitter Stephen Wickens (Florida Gulf Coast) had two RBI.  The MoonDogs Trever Adams was 2-for-3 with two RBI in the loss. 

Wisconsin Rapids 3, Madison 0
The Rafters used great pitching from Mitch Running (Wisconsin La Crosse) and Steve Godawa (Valparaiso) to shutout the Madison Mallards Monday night.  Running started the game and threw 6.0 innings of three hit baseball while Godawa earned the 3.0 inning save and only gave up one hit.  The Santa Clara tandem of Quinton Perry and Evan Peters provided the little offense the Rafters would need.  Both players had a hit and a RBI.  Rafael Lopez (Florida State) continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-3 night. 

Duluth 11, Rochester 9
In a game that featured 26 hits and 20 runs, the Duluth Huskies outscored the Rochester Honkers and took the game 11-9 at Mayo Field in Rochester, MN.  The Huskies used a three run ninth inning to come from behind.  The Huskies Cody Asche (Nebraska) had one of the best offensive nights on 2010 with a five hit, six RBI night.  Huskie lead-off hitter Zeke DeVoss (Miami) set the tone for the offense going 3-for-6 with two runs scored, a home run and three RBI.  Rochester Honker Jimmy Waters (Kansas) was 2-for-4 with two RBI in the loss. 

Eau Claire 13, La Crosse 3
The Eau Claire Express broke the South Division tie atop the leader board with a 13-3 win over the La Crosse Loggers.  Coming in to tonight both teams were sitting at 3-0, but thanks to an offensive outburst; the Express move to 4-0 while the Loggers are now 3-1.  The Express were led by five players who had multi-hit games.  Jacob Morris (Arkansas) led the way with a 2-for-4 night with a run scored and three RBI.  Nate Orf (Illinois Chicago) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.  Express starter Bobby Mares (New Mexico) cooled the Loggers bats over 5.1 innings.  The Loggers Mike Marjama (Sacramento City) had three hits in the loss. 

Wisconsin 6, Battle Creek 0
The Wisconsin Woodchucks shutout the Battle Creek Bombers 6-0 on Monday night.  The Woodchucks Don Lisi (Central Missouri) improved to 4-2 on the season by throwing an 8.0 innings four hitter.  Lisi struck out seven Battle Creek batters while only walking one.  The ‘Chucks were led by Robbie De La Cruz (UNLV) who was 3-for-5 with two RBI.  The Bombers Kendall Thamm (Angelina) took the loss giving up two runs through 5.0 innings.
