Brainerd 2, Rochester 1

Casey Roche’s (Pittsburgh) great day at the plate, in the field and on the mound helped the Lunkers to get a sweep over the Rochester Honkers with a 2-1 win at Mayo Field on Monday. 

Roche hit a solo home run in the 4th to dead center field to put the Lunkers ahead for good. 

Roche also shined in the field, making a diving catch in the second and throwing out Rochester’s Davey Wright trying to score in the 5th. 

In the bottom of the 9th, Roche came on to record his 3rd save of the season.  Joe Willman (Northern Colorado) was strong again for the Lunkers, going 7.0 innings, giving up five hits and one run, striking out six.

Wisconsin 9, Madison 4

The Wisconsin Woodchucks topped visiting Madison 9-4 Monday night at Athletic Park, as the ‘Chucks took game one of a three-game series.  The Woodchucks improved to 10-13, which is good for sixth place in the South Division while the Mallards fell to 16-9, falling to second place against the inactive Express.  Ryan Iverson (Wisconsin Stevens Point) took the win, throwing 2.1 innings, allowing only two hits and one walk, while striking out five.  Dan Tobik (Tennessee-Martin) assumed the loss, allowing three runs to score in one-plus inning of work.

Wisconsin Rapids 8, Waterloo 7

The Wisconsin Rapids Rafters fought to an 8-7 victory over the Waterloo Bucks capped by a Cody Koback (Wisconsin Stevens Point) walk-off single in the tenth.  The winning rally began with a one out walk. Kyle Peterson (Eastern Michigan) drew a free pass as the second batter of the tenth. Then with two outs, Bobby Martin (Valparaiso) grounded a hard hopper to the hole at short. The shortstop gloved the ball and fired high to first, sending Peterson to third. Koback, the very next batter, fell behind 0-2, but then lofted a sure base hit the opposite way to right ending the game in Rafters victory.  

Willmar 6, Alexandria 5

Willmar scored six runs in the first two innings, but did not score after that and narrowly held on to a 6-5 victory over the Alexandria Beetles at Knute Nelson Memorial Park Monday night. Four Stingers had multi-hit games led by Rob Elliott (Bradley) who went 2-for-5 with two runs, two stolen bases and one RBI. Sean Dwyer went 2-for-4 with one run and two RBIs. Eduardo Gonzalez (Alcorn State) and Mitch Rowan (Willamette) also had two hits each.

Michael Jahns (Northwestern) earned the victory after his longest outing of the year, allowing three runs in 5.1 innings. Kurt Spomer (Creighton) picked up the save by getting the final five outs of the game. The game ended on a spectacular diving stop by Gonzalez at first base to begin a 3-6-3 double play with the tying run on third base and the winning run on first.

Mankato 5, Thunder Bay 0

The hometown hero Blake Schwartz (Minnesota St.) pitched another fabulous game for the MoonDogs Monday night in a 5-0 victory over the Thunder Bay Border Cats. Schwartz pitched a complete game, giving up two hits and striking out a career high 14 Thunder Bay hitters. Schwartz moves to 3-0 on the season and carries a Northwoods League best 0.83 ERA.  The game was tied 0-0 until the MoonDogs got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to a Cody Ferrell (Seminole St.) two-run home run that also scored Blaire Moore (San Diego St.) Shaun Cooper (Utah) provided the rest of the offense in the bottom of the eighth, crushing a three-run home run to deep left-centerfield to give the MoonDogs a 5-0 lead.

Green Bay 6, Battle Creek 5

The Green Bay Bullfrogs won on a walk-off two-run home run by Mitch Haniger (Cal Poly). With the Bullfrogs down by one run entering the bottom of the ninth inning, the Bomber closer Kristian Calibuso (Eastern Michigan) walked the leadoff hitter Jacob May. After moving to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Billy Moon, Mitch Haniger hit a linedrive home run to left centerfield.  With nine games left in the first half, Green Bay is two games back of first place, a half game back of the Mallards who they play three times beginning on Wednesday, and they are tied with the Bombers heading into the finale on Tuesday.

Duluth 6, St. Cloud 5

The Huskies took down the River Bats in extra innings Monday night.  Duluth’s Brian Hansen (St. Cloud State) scored on a River Bats error to score the go ahead run.  Every Huskie batter registered a hit on the night as Mike Bisenius (Wayne State) was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.  Elliot Van Gaver (Nevada) picked up his 2nd win of the season and Ryan Ullmann (Concordia) notched his 1st save of 2011 after throwing the final 1.0 inning.
