Wisconsin 7, Madison 2

Madison 3, Wisconsin 2

The Madison Mallards came into Tuesday evening one-half game behind the Eau Claire Express for first-place in the Northwoods League’s South Division, and after a double-header split with the Wisconsin Woodchucks at the "Duck Pond," the team finds itself tied with Eau Claire for first. A total of 4,964 fans came out for the first twin-bill of the Mallards’ 2011 season.

Game One – Starter Tom Briner (UC – Davis) stymied the Mallards’ offense through six of the seven innings played, allowing one earned run on only three hits. He struck out eight batters and walked none. The one run Briner gave up was the first earned run to his stat line this season, increasing his ERA to 0.56.

Game Two – The Mallards battled back in game two of the series, winning the night-cap 3-2 in dramatic fashion. The win went to Mallards’ reliever Matt Milroy (Illinois), who dominated the Woodchucks in two innings of work. Milroy (2-0) faced one over the minimum, walking one and striking out four. Taking the loss for Wisconsin was Anthony Drobnick (Washington State). He pitched 1.1 innings and gave up the lone home run.

La Crosse 3, Eau Claire 1

The La Crosse Loggers won their second straight game on Tuesday night by defeating the host Eau Claire Express 3-1 at Carson Park.  The Loggers were able to take advantage of some early walks by starting pitcher Matt McDaniel (San Diego State), and the Express offense was not able to get the clutch hit they needed. Cameron Flynn (Kentucky) led the way for the Loggers at the plate, going 3-for-5. The win was the second straight for the Loggers as they improve to 10-15 on the season.

Alexandria 4, Willmar 3

Willmar took an early 3-0 lead in the third inning of the game against Alexandria, but they could not score from that point forward. The Stingers ended up dropping the game, 4-3, in 10 innings to the Beetles at Knute Nelson Memorial Park Tuesday night. Three Stingers had multi-hit games. Rob Elliott (Bradley) and Blake Shepherd (Viterbo) each went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Jason Leblebijian (Bradley) was 2-for-5 with the other run scored. The Beetles scored a run in each the fourth, fifth and seventh innings to tie the game. The Beetles then won the game in the 10th inning with three hits, capped off by a game-winning single by Logan Bowers.

Wisconsin Rapids 4, Waterloo 1

Thanks to some shut down pitching, the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters did not need a thrilling finish Tuesday night as they led from the fourth inning on in a 4-1 victory over the Waterloo Bucks. The win sweeps the two game series against the Bucks and gives the Rafters a 4-1 edge in the season set. In his best start to date Michael Huckabay (Madison) allowed just a single run over 6.0 innings of work.

Thunder Bay 12, Mankato 2

The Border Cats put an end to their five game losing streak in a big way Tuesday night in Mankato as they crushed the MoonDogs 12-2.  The 12 runs were a season high for the Cats and they pounded out 14 hits in the victory.  One night after getting shutout on just two hits, every batter in the Cats lineup had at least one hit as Thunder Bay improved its record to 10-16.  John Straka (North Dakota State) had another strong start as he ran his record to 3-0.  The right-hander allowed five hits and two runs over 6.2 innings with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Green Bay 8, Battle Creek 7

The Bullfrogs walked-off for the second night in a row against the Battle Creek Bombers in an 8-7 win. With Monday’s hero Mitch Haniger (Cal Poly) waiting on-deck, Billy Moon (Gonzaga) hit the game winning single for the ‘Frogs. Moon took a 2-0 pitch right back up the middle past the drawn-in infield to score Ryan Allgrove (UC Davis).  The bullpen of Adam Cimber (Washington), John Colella (Holy Cross) and Kyle Linquist (Marietta) allowed just one run in 8.1 innings. It is the only earned run they have allowed during their current four-game winning streak, which is the longest of the year.

Duluth 3, St. Cloud 2

A pitchers duel ended in favor of the Huskies Tuesday night. Duluth dealt the Bats their second straight loss in a 3-2 final.  Duluth starter, Austen Lubinsky (Minnesota), worked effectively against the Bats lineup pitching 7.0 innings of one run ball to take home the win. Jason Whalen (Lynn) notched his fifth save of the season for the Huskies. J.R. Reynolds (Ohio) performed admirably at the plate for St. Cloud. The Bats catcher smacked an RBI double and reached base twice in three at bats.
