Thunder Bay 5, Brainerd 3

The Border Cats used a three-run 3rd inning en route to a 5-3 victory over the Lunkers in Brainerd Sunday afternoon.  The Cats banged out 12 hits and they now share first place with Rochester atop the North Division with a 3-1 record.  Thunder Bay’s two NWL All Stars led the way on the mound.  John Straka pitched 7.1 innings as he ran his record to 4-1.  Straka allowed eight hits and two runs, with one walk and four strikeouts.  Brad Delatte got the final five outs for his third save.  The lefty gave up one unearned run and struck out a pair.  Casey Selsor continued his hot hitting, going 3-5 with two RBI’s and a run scored.  Kyle Mossbarger filling in at third base, had a 3-4 day at the plate with a run scored.  Ty Wosleger went 3-5 and knocked in two more runs, giving him a team leading 22 on the season. 

Rochester3, Duluth 1                 

A slightly rejuvenated Rochester Honkers team has started the second half strong, going into today’s game with the Duluth Huskies .The Honkers took that new found energy to the Huskies, winning 3-1 behind a strong pitching performance by Drew Bowen. Bowen pitched seven innings, allowing just four hits and one run, which was unearned.Austin House shutout the Huskiesin the ninth, striking out the side for his third save of the season. Bowen’s counterpart Dane Gronewald took a no-hitter into the bottom of the fifth, before the Honkers solved him.  Davy Wright followed up a 3-for-3 performance last night with a double in his second at-bat to break up the no hitter. 

Waterloo 3, Eau Claire 0

The Waterloo Bucks won their second game in a row versus the Eau Claire Express at the renovated Riverfront Stadium 3-0. Mike Wisecarver was the starting pitcher for the Waterloo Bucks and continued to deliver. Wisecarver pitched into the eighth inning, getting only three hits against him. The Bucks were again aided in winning the game by an error from the Eau Claire Express. An error by Eau Claire’s second basemen in the first inning allowed Thomas Lindauer to get on base. Later in the inning, Lindauer was batted in by Jeff Popick.

Wisconsin Rapids 7, Madison 1

One strong start, zero errors and seven runs all equaled a second straight win for the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters as they defeated the Madison Mallards 7-1 Sunday night. The strong start belonged to Brad Douthit who allowed just a single hit over his first five innings of work. Douthit squirmed out of multi-runner trouble in both the sixth and seventh to post seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits, two walks and punching out five. Seven runs for the Rafters came thanks to seven hits, along with four Mallards errors.

Battle Creek 6, Wisconsin 3

The Bombers put together their second straight comeback win against the Wisconsin Woodchucks in a 6-3 victory to take the series. Behind by a pair in the third, Bombers All-Star Troy White belted a two-run homer to tie the game,while Jordan Dean helped re-tie the game in the fifth off a sacrifice fly RBI to bring home Brendan Norton. Battle Creek pulled ahead for the first time in the sixth when Danny Rockett singled into centerfield, and they sealed the deal in the eighth when White and Bryce Redeker both scored off Woodchucks pitched Justin Burns, who surrendered four hits in the inning. John Morrison started and went 4.2 innings and allowed three runs. Alex Tukey closed for Battle Creek and recorded his third save.

Green Bay 6, La Crosse 1

Cory Kyle started for the Green Bay Bullfrogs and allowed just one run in a 6-1 victory against the Loggers in La Crosse. The ‘Frogs scored two in the first and three in the third as Adam Cimber tossed three shutout innings to earn his second save of the year. Ty Filliben led off the game with a double. Jacob May hit a fielder’s choice back to the pitcher as Filliben got caught between second and third. May would move to second during the rundown. After a strikeout and a walk Cameron Dullnig hit a single into right field for a two-RBI, two-out single to give the ‘Frogs a 2-0 lead. Adam Cimber entered the game in the seventh and gave up just two singles to earn the three inning save and give the ‘Frogs a 6-1 victory. Making the Bullfrogs pitching performance even more impressive is that La Crosse entered the game with a team batting average over .300 in their previous ten ball games.

Mankato 14, Alexandria 4

In front of sellout crowd the MoonDogs came to life on Sunday night, clobbering the Alexandria Beetles by a score of 14-4 at Franklin Rogers Park. Joe Loftus led the offensive attack for the MoonDogs going 2-for-4, with two RBIs and scoring three runs. Blake Schwartz was once again fantastic from the mound, giving up eight hits and three runs in six innings of work and striking out eight. The ‘Dogs had a huge fourth inning, scoring eight runs and sending Alexandria starting pitcher Casey Shiver to the dugout with one out in the fourth. In the fourth, Brennan Moore led off the scoring with double that scored James Roberts from third. Nick Judkins, who is a Northwoods League All-Star, singled scoring Matt Reida from third base, Judkins then advance to second on an overthrow and Brennan Moore dove into home to score another run for the ‘Dogs. The after a combination of wild pitches and stolen bases the MoonDogs were up 9-1 and scored eight runs on three hits with three Beetles errors.

St. Cloud 8, Willmar 7

Weather forced an early stoppage to the slugfest between the Bats and Stingers Sunday night. St. Cloud led 8-7 when the game was declared over after the fifth inning. 

As tornado sirens blared throughout the ballpark, Andy Henkemeyer blasted a double to begin the game. The All-Star touched home on a Bryan Haar base hit. The Bats led 1-0. Bryan Haar hit his team leading fifth home run to make it a one run lead. 

When weather stopped the game the Bats were winning and therefore take the victory.
