Willmar, Mankato

Willmar picked up three victories in one day against the Mankato MoonDogs Saturday night at Franklin Rogers Park, including a seven-inning shutout. At 4:05 p.m., Willmar and Mankato resumed a game from June 21 that was suspended in the bottom of the 12 inning in an 8-8 tied. Chris Gonzales shut down the MoonDogs for two innings, while Jason Leblebijian hit an RBI single in the top of the 13th to score Ryan Dettman and give the Stingers a 9-8 victory in 13 innings. Dettman led off the inning with a walk and a stolen base to set up Leblebijian’s game-winning hit.

In a seven-inning game to make up Friday’s postponed contest, the Stingers scored in the first inning and led the whole way after Mitch Rowan began the game with a walk and scored on a wild pitch. Garrett Borba followed suit in the third with a leadoff walk and scored on a safety squeeze bunt by Eduardo Gonzalez. Jarid Scarafiotti singled in the fourth to score Mitch Delfino after he singled and stole second. The Stingers added their final run on a leadoff walk by Rowan. Ricky Knapp earned the victory after going five innings and allowing only three hits with no walks in a 4-0 victory.

In the nightcap, Leblebijian hit a three-run homer to left field in the first inning, and the Stingers never looked back. John Haberman added an RBI double to score Jake Stinnett in the first. Stinnett added an RBI later in the game to give Willmar a 5-0 advantage. The MoonDog sadded two unearned runs to make the final score 5-2. Thomas Taylor earned the victory with four scoreless innings; while Kurt Spomer picked up his team-leading fifth save of the season.

Wisconsin 5, Eau Claire 1

The Wisconsin Woodchucks swept the Eau Claire Express in a double-header to win their third and fourth consecutive games, by a score of 5-1 in game one and 4-2 in game two. 
In the first game, the Woodchucks’ offense broke through in the sixth, as they scored three runs, highlighted by a two-run double by Garrett Yrigoyen. The Woodchucks tacked on an insurance runs in the seventh, but they wouldn’t need it as Ryan Iverson shut down the Express, picking up his Northwoods League-leading seventh win of the season. 

In game two, it was again the Woodchucks that took the first lead of the game.  Anthony Drobnick came in to close out the game for the Woodchucks in the seventh, and retired the Express in order, giving the Woodchucks their fourth straight victory and putting them in second place in the Northwoods League South Division.

Duluth 5, Brainerd 1

The Duluth Huskies took part in the second of three consecutive double headers Saturday with the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers on Saturday night at Wade Stadium.  In the first of the two games, Duluth topped Brainerd by a score of 5-1 with Austin Lubinsky earning his second win of the season by pithing 5.0 innings and allowing one run.  Adam Humes went 3-for-3 at the plate, and KC Clabough went 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. In the second game, Brainerd scored five run in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie, with Duluth unable to catch up for the remainder of the game.  Clabough had two hits and drove in a run for the Huskies. 

Madison 9, La Crosse 7

The La Crosse Loggers and Madison Mallards split a double header on Saturday night.  Madison won the first, 9-7 and the Loggers took the second, 5-4. Jon Surber started game the first game for the Loggers.  Surber cruised through the first two innings and seemed like he was on his way when he hit a brick wall in the form of the Mallards. Madison scored five runs in the third, including a three-run home run by Matt Juengel and chased Surber. Trevor Teykl took the loss and Travis Park erearned the win for the Mallards.

Game two started roughly thirty minutes after the conclusion of the first.  Jake Stassi started game two and had a very similar start to Surber’s.  Stassi looked good after the first, but couldn’t make it through much more.  Stassi allowed four runs on seven hits and was relieved by Dan Child. Child pitched the last four innings and earned the win. Child did not allow a run on only three hits and struck out three.

Waterloo 15, Green Bay 4

In a hot and humid game versus the Green Bay Bullfrogs the Waterloo Bucks were on fire. Waterloo defeated Green Bay 15-4 in the final of a two-game series. The Waterloo Bucks hitting was unstoppable. For the second time in a game this season, every player in the Buck’s line-up got on base at least once, including the pitch hitters. The Bucks also had an unbelievable three home runs duringthe game. Cameron Perkins hit his fifth home run, tying the team record for most homeruns.

Alexandria 17, Rochester 4

The Rochester Honkers continued to struggle in Alexandria, dropping their second game in a row, and fifth game of the season in Alexandria, 17-4 at Knute Nelson Memorial Park.  The Honkers record drops to 6-4 in the second half, and Alexandria will take over first place in the North Division with the win. The Beetles would strike early and often, scoring in six of eight innings they had at-bats, including a seven-run second inning.  The Honkers would not find the scoreboard until the fifth when Bryan Karraker drove in Seth McMullen and Tony Kemp.  The two runs would only put a dent in the already large Alexandria lead, making the score 11-2 for the time being. 

Battle Creek 7, Wisconsin Rapids 6

The Bombers won in a dramatic extra-innings 7-6 victory over the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters Saturday night at C.O. Brown Stadium to finish off the season series. The Rafters scored an early pair when Brandon Hohl hit a two-RBI double in the third, and would homer again in the sixth to put Rapids back in the game. Battle Creek surged in the fourth inning, bringing four runs across off Bryce Redeker and Rhett Goodmiller base hits, and a Brendan Norton groundout. The Rafters tied the gamein the eighth with three more runs and sent it into extra innings, but in the bottom of the 10th, all-star Brett Wiley brought home Jordan Dean from second base on a sharp single into centerfield, winning the ballgame. Closer Kristian Calibuso got the win after throwing a scoreless tenth inning.

Thunder Bay 2, St. Cloud 0

The Border Cats completed a two game sweep of St. Cloud by blanking the River Bats 2-0 before 713 fans Saturday night at Subway Field at Port Arthur Stadium. John Straka started for the Cats, but went just two innings as he was on a pitch count prior to the All Star game.  Taylor Bratton threw two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts to pick up the win as he ran his record to 2-2. The Cats scored their first run in the 2nd inning on an RBI groundout by Kyle Mossbarger.  Ty Wosleger scored on the play after he singled, stole second, and advanced to third base on a throwing error.
