The Border Cats split a doubleheader with the first place Alexandria Beetles Thursday night, winning the opener 9-5 and losing the nightcap 8-3 before 1,075 fans at Subway Field at Port Arthur Stadium. In game one, the Cats erupted for five runs in the first inning and rolled to the 9-5 victory. Ty Woselger (Fairfield University) led the way going 2-3, including a solo home run, his third of the season. Wosleger scored twice and drove in three runs.  Evan Weibel(Nicholls State) went 2-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Taylor Bratton (West Alabama) pitched a complete game to improve his record to 3-2.  

In game two, the Beetles broke open a 1-1 game by scoring four times in the 3rd inning.  Lee Valencheck (Wright State) made a spot start and took the loss to fall to 0-4. Valencheck pitched three innings and gave up six hits and five runs. The right-hander walked one and fanned four.  Cullen Mahoney (South Mountain College) went 3-4 with a double and an RBI and Kevin Taylor (St. Joseph’s) had a 2-3 night at the plate with a  run scored. 

Madison 12, Wisconsin 6

The Madison Mallards defeated the Wisconsin Woodchucks 12-6 Thursday night at Athletic Park. The 12 runs scored by the Mallards are the most the team put up in a single game since a 12-1 victory at Green Bay July 1, and also the most in any game of the second half of the season. Every single Mallards hitter had at least one base hit in the game. Justin Parr (Illinois) led the team with three hits. Mallards’ starter Rusty Shellhorn (Texas Tech) was the main benefactor of the offensive attack and picked up his fifth win of the season by going five complete innings. He allowed four runs and scattered six hits to improve to 5-2 on the season. He also walked two and struck out five, and his season earned run average is now 2.54.

La Crosse 9, Waterloo 3

The La Crosse Loggers scored eight runs in the final three innings to come from behind and defeat the Waterloo Bucks 9-3 at Riverfront Stadium on Thursday night in a battle for first place in the South Division. Down 3-1 with two outs and one man on in the bottom of the seventh, Logger centerfielder Jimmy Brennan (St. John’s) blasted his third home run of the summer over the right field wall and the Loggers never looked back after that.  They would tack on one more in the seventh to take the lead and then add three more in the eighth and two more in the ninth to run the score to 9-3.

Mankato 4, Brainerd 1

The Mankato MoonDogs were the victors on Thursday evening against the Brainerd Lakes Lunkers by a score of 4-1 behind another strong pitching performance by Blake Schwartz (Minnesota St.). Schwartz pitched 5 2/3 innings, spreading out seven hits, giving up one runs and striking out four Lunker batters. Schwartz now moves to a remarkable 6-1 on the season, with a 1.55 ERA. The MoonDogs jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning after roughing up Lunker starting pitcher Jason Forjet (Florida Gulf Coast). Coming into the game, Forjet led the Northwoods League in ERA with a 1.33. Forjet’s ERA jumped to 1.95 after being roughed up by the ‘Dogs.

St. Cloud 2, Duluth 1

Jon Hansen emerged from the dugout to remove Matt Iannazzo (Pittsburgh) after 7.2 innings of one run ball. However, after striking out the first two batters of the eighth, Iannazzo wanted to sit down one more hitter. Matt summoned the strength after a 100 pitches to strike out onemore to end the inning. This final out would help secure Iannazzo his fourth win of the season. St. Cloud carried a 2-1 lead into the ninth. Bats closer, Travis Unthank (Central Missouri) sat down all three hitters he faced to notch his eighth save of the season. 
Thanks to his eight strikeouts, Iannazzo remained unbeaten for the summer. He allowed just one walk, and picked off yet another runner. The Pitt lefty’s ERA now stands at 1.56

Willmar 7, Rochester 3

Pat Stover (Santa Clara), Jason Leblebijian (Bradley) and Sean Dwyer (Florida Gulf Coast) all had solo home runs for the Willmar Stingers in a 7-3 victory against the Rochester Honkers at Bill Taunton Stadium Thursday night. Willmar claimed the victory after a four-run eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie. Stover led off the frame with a double to left field and then was pinch-run for by Ryan Dettman (Oregon State). Following a Dwyer walk, and Mitch Delfino (California) reached on a throwing error by the pitcher Austin House that allowed Dettman to score from second base and give the Stingers the lead. Willmar added to its lead when Dwyer scored on a wild pitch and Mitch Rowan (Willamette) drove home two runs on a two-out single, bringing home Delfino and Garrett Borba (Pacific). Tanner Banks (Salt Lake College) earned the victory after 2.1 innings out of the bullpen. He retired all seven batters he faced, including three by strikeout. Banks is now 4-1 with a 3.74 ERA for theseason. Ben Burns (Daytona State College) had a quality start for the Stingers, allowing only one run on four hits in 6.0 innings.
