Rochester, Minn (July 14th, 2013)–Sunday afternoon wrapped up yet another week in the Northwoods League. The highlights of the day were the three shutouts tossed in the North division. Duluth, Mankato, and Waterloo were all able to hold their opponents scoreless at home.

Duluth enjoyed the most comfortable win on the night. They shut out Rochester in an 8-0 win where they allowed just five hits. Meanwhile, Mankato and Waterloo both won their games by just a single run. The two starters both went seven or more innings and were able to record wins.

On a whole, offenses had a rough day on Sunday. Nine teams were held to four or fewer runs, and as mentioned three teams were shut out.

Battle Creek 12, Green Bay 10 (F/10)

With all of that talk of pitching and shutouts, Sunday’s game in Green Bay didn’t fit the same mold. After getting down 7-1 going into the 7th, the Bombers put up a nine run inning to take a 10-7 lead. Thanks to the Bullfrog offense, this lead was gone by the 8th and the game was sent into extras. In the top of the 10th, Cam Gibson (Michigan State) drove in the go-ahead runs with a double.

Wisconsin Rapids 3, Eau Claire 1

While the Rafters didn’t match the three teams with shutouts on Sunday, they still got a phenomenal pitching effort. Starter Brad Stroik (Stevens Point) threw 7.1 innings and allows just four hits and one run while striking out five batters. He was followed by a perfect 1.2 innings from J.P. Feyereisen (Stevens Point).

Madison 4, Lakeshore 2

After the Chinooks tied the game at two in the 5th inning, the Mallards responded with runs in each of the next two innings and held on for the win. Hunter May (UNC-Charlotte) recorded his tenth save in the victory.

Wisconsin 11, La Crosse 7

The Woodchucks got off to a very poor start as they allowed five runs in the top of the 1st inning. However, their offense came around to bail out the pitching staff as they scored two in the bottom frame and then six more in the 4th. Garrett Rucker (Arkansas) had four RBI in the win.

Duluth 8, Rochester 0

The Huskies may have pushed the Honkers to their low point on the season with Sunday’s shut out. Starter Chris Cervantes (Eastern Kentucky) pitched seven innings and allowed just three hits. Keith Curcio (Florida Southern) collected a pair of hits and a pair of walks while driving in three runs.

St. Cloud 6, Willmar 5

The Rox grabbed the win in a back-and-forth contest with the Stingers on Sunday. They were paced by the top two hitters in their order who combined for five hits in eight at bats and drove in four runs. The Rox’ bullpen combined for four innings and just two runs on three hits to help shut the door.

Mankato 1, Alexandria 0

The MoonDogs got out-hit eight to four, but they made up the difference with a spotless game in the field while Alexandria made a pair of errors that hurt them. Both starters in this game were great as they combined for 14.1 innings and just one run on 12 hits.

Waterloo 1, Thunder Bay 0

Lately it seems like Waterloo simply can’t do anything wrong. On Sunday, they continued to roll as they allowed just four hits in a win over Thunder Bay. Starter Aaron Rhodes (Florida) went seven innings and allowed three hits while working around four walks and striking out six to get the win.
