Rochester, Minn (July 15th, 2013)–On a night meant for offense, Jacob Stone (Weatherford CC) tossed the first no-hitter of the 2013 season in the Northwoods League on Monday. Stone allowed just two walks while striking out seven and picking up the win.

While Major League players were hitting moonshots out of Citi Field in New York on Monday, Northwoods League offenses were putting up runs left and right. The night was led by the Green Bay Bullfrogs, who put up 20 runs in a winning effort against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters.

The Eau Claire Express, Alexandria Blue Anchors, and Madison Mallards all also put up double digit run totals on Monday night. While the former two teams pulled it off at home, the Mallards were able to accomplish it in a road win.

Waterloo 8, Thunder Bay 0

Just when it was thought that Waterloo’s second half couldn’t get any better, it got better on Monday night. Jacob Stone’s no-hitter against Thunder Bay was the first of the 2013 season in the Northwoods League. He gave up just two walks while racking up seven strikeouts.

Lakeshore 5, Wisconsin 4

The Chinooks scored two runs in the bottom of the final frame to come away with a two run walk-off victory over Wisconsin on Monday. Ryan Krill (Michigan State) launched a two run walk-off home run to propel the Chinooks to victory.

Duluth 5, Rochester 2

Jake Heissler (Central Missouri) pitched six innings and gave up just one earned run on four hits in a winning effort. The Huskies got three innings of shutout work from their bullpen to help keep the Honkers at bay. Meanwhile, the Honkers must continue to work on how to get out of their second half slump.

Eau Claire 14, Battle Creek 6

After getting down 3-0 early, the Express put up back-to-back five run innings in the 3rd and 4th innings to grab a win a win over the Bombers. Blake Schmit (Maryland) led the offensive attack with three hits, two runs, and two RBI out of the third spot in the order.

Alexandria 10, Mankato 5

After allowing the MoonDogs to tie the game in the top of the 8th, the Blue Anchors responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning to grab a victory over Mankato. The Blue Anchors had fewer hits (nine) than runs (ten), but they were able to coax seven walks in the win.

Green Bay 20, Wisconsin Rapids 5

A night in baseball is certainly good when a 20 run game is the second most exciting thing to happen. The Bullfrogs had a slew of great offensive performances, but they were led by Trevin Sonnier (Dallas Baptist). Out of the number nine spot, Sonnier was a perfect 5/5 with a walk and five RBI.

Madison 11, La Crosse 2

Believe it or not, this was a tightly contested game. Up until the 8th inning, the Mallards held just a 4-2 lead before breaking things open in the final two innings. Every Madison offensive player collected a hit on Monday night and the team also drew nine walks. All in all, it’s surprising they only scored eleven times.

Willmar 4, St. Cloud 3

The two starting pitchers in this game were fantastic, but Colin Poche (Arkansas) was just slightly better than his opponent. Poche pitched seven innings and gave up three hits and three while while striking out seven hitters. On the season, his ERA now stands at 1.55.
