Mequon, WI – Chinooks Field Manager Eddy Morgan knows if you want to score runs at Kapco Park on the scenic bluff above Lake Michigan, you better have some speed.  With that in mind, the Lakeshore Chinooks have added three speedy outfielders in Joven Afenir (Kansas), Gage Canning (Arizona State), and Joe Duncan (Eastern Illinois) for the 2016 season.

Joven Afenir, a 5-11 centerfielder from Murrieta, CA, has been wowing the Jayhawk faithful with his dazzling glove for the past three seasons and was featured on ESPN’s Top Ten plays for a diving catch in 2015.  Coming into the 2016 season, Afenir has made 54 starts in the outfield and was awarded the team’s 2015 John Trombold Golden Glove Award.  Hitting primarily in the #2 spot, Afenir has a career batting average of .288 and a .362 on-base percentage.  This season, Afenir has been solid – hitting .267 with a .367 slugging percentage and a .346 on-base average and has started all but one of the Jayhawks’ 25 games.

Coming off a highly decorated prep career, Cage Canning has hit the ground running for the Arizona State Sun Devils this year as a freshman.  The native of Ramona, CA was a Louisville Slugger and Perfect Game All-American after hitting .374 with 18 home runs and 54 stolen bases at Ramona High School.  The 5’11 freshman stepped into right field on Opening Day for ASU and has not looked back.  Playing alongside Chinook alum Andrew Shaps in the outfield, Canning has gained valuable experience in starting 22 games.  Despite hitting .200, Canning has knocked in 12 runs and has stolen five bases.

Joe Duncan was selected to the Ohio Valley Conference All-Freshman Team in 2015 after hitting .303 and leading Eastern Illinois with eight (8 for 11) stolen bases.  The speedy 6’2 centerfielder and leadoff hitter from Highland, IL had 20 multi-hit games.  Despite the team getting off to a slow start, Duncan has been a steady leadoff man, hitting .262 and stealing a team high eight bases out of twelve attempts.  Duncan’s speed will and aggressive style of play should help him flourish at Kapco Park.

You can catch your first glimpse of the 2016 Chinooks roster on Saturday, June 4th when Lakeshore takes on the Green Bay Bullfrogs at 6:35pm. Season tickets, mini game packages, and group tickets are all currently on sale. Single game tickets go on sale to the public Tuesday, May 3rd at 10:00am.
