Loggers Bolster Pitching Staff with Three RHPs
LA CROSSE, WIS. –The La Crosse Loggers Baseball Club announced Monday the addition of three pitchers to its 2019 roster. Matt Kennedy (Saint Joseph’s University), Hunter Koep (North Dakota State University), and Matt Sellers (Nova Southeastern University) will join the La Crosse pitching staff on full-season contracts this summer.
Matt Kennedy is a 6-foot-8 sophomore from Haddon Height, New Jersey. Kennedy earned NJ.com Colonial Conference Player of the Year as a senior and helped Haddon Heights High School to three consecutive division titles prior to attending Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. The tall right-hander appeared in 12 games for the SJU Hawks in his freshman season, making nine starts with a 5.24 ERA over 44.2 innings. Kennedy demonstrated good command during his first collegiate season, walking just 14 hitters compared to 34 strikeouts, producing a 2.43 strikeout-to-walk ratio that ranked 3rdon the Hawks’ staff.
Hunter Koep is a native of Northfield, Minnesota that will be joining the Loggers after his sophomore season at North Dakota State University. As a freshman, Koep appeared in 10 games as a reliever, posting a 6.23 ERA over 17.1 innings pitched. The 6-foot-4 reliever may also play some first base for the Bison in 2019, as the two-way star batted .397 with 12 home runs and a .552 on-base percentage in his prep career at Northfield High School. Koep finished his career with Conference Player of the Year and All-State recognition in his senior campaign after he hit .407 with a .610 on-base percentage, .907 slugging percentage, seven home runs and 28 walks.
Matt Sellers is a junior right-hander from Vero Beach, Florida that is in the midst of his first season with Nova Southeastern University. Sellers appeared in 16 games for Hillsborough Community College last year, posting a 5-3 record and 3.28 ERA over 57.2 innings. The hard-throwing Florida native transferred to Hillsborough after a redshirt season at the University of South Florida and appeared on Baseball America’s Junior College Prospect MLB Draft list for the 2018 season. Sellers also made seven appearances for the Boca Raton Blazers of the South Florida Collegiate Baseball League last summer, posting a 3-1 record and 1.42 ERA in 25.1 innings. Sellers will continue the tradition of Nova Southeastern Sharks playing in La Crosse, joining a list that includes minor leaguers Joe DiBenedetto and Derik Beauprez.
