Trio pushes NWL alums to 420th, 421st, and 422nd to reach Major Leagues

Rochester, Minn. – The Northwoods League is proud to celebrate the Major League debuts of three former players this week: infielder/outfielder Tommy Troy (Traverse City Pit Spitters), left-handed pitcher Brycen Mautz (Waterloo Bucks), and right-handed pitcher Tanner Andrews (Kalamazoo Growlers). The trio brings the total number of NWL alumni to reach MLB to 420, 421, and 422 respectively.

Tommy Troy, a native of San Jose, California, and a product of Stanford University, played for the Traverse City Pit Spitters in 2020. The Arizona Diamondbacks’ first-round pick (12th overall) in the 2023 MLB Draft made his debut on May 24, 2026, against the Colorado Rockies at Chase Field. Troy went 2-for-4 with two doubles in his first game, including his first MLB hit off José Quintana.

Brycen Mautz, from San Diego, California, and a University of San Diego standout, pitched for the Waterloo Bucks in 2021. The St. Louis Cardinals’ second-round pick (59th overall) in the 2022 MLB Draft made his debut on May 25, 2026, in relief against the Milwaukee Brewers. The left-hander pitched three innings, striking out two while allowing two earned runs.

Tanner Andrews, a Rochester, Indiana, native and Purdue University alum, played for the Kalamazoo Growlers in 2016. The right-hander, originally drafted in the 10th round by the Miami Marlins in 2018, signed with the Toronto Blue Jays and made his MLB debut on May 25, 2026, against the Miami Marlins. Andrews worked a perfect ninth inning in relief.

Northwoods League Statistics:

Tommy Troy (Traverse City Pit Spitters, 2020): Batted .318 with 5 doubles and 14 RBI in 21 games.

Brycen Mautz (Waterloo Bucks, 2021): Posted a 2.08 ERA with 29 strikeouts and three saves in 12 appearances (30.1 IP).

Tanner Andrews (Kalamazoo Growlers, 2016): Made 3 appearances with a 4.70 ERA in 15.1 innings.

These debuts continue the Northwoods League’s strong track record of developing talent for the highest level of the game.
