Final Night of NWL Regular Season Play

The Wisconsin Woodchucks clinched a spot in the South Division Playoffs as they beat the La Crosse Loggers 6-0 on Monday night at Athletic Park. The Woodchuck’s pitching staff came up huge as Andrew Klausmeier and Mitchell Beacom (UCLA) combined to throw a three hitter while striking out ten. The Woodchuck’s only managed six hits, but the Loggers committed five errors and walked five. Carlos Amezquita (Pepperdine) was 2-for-4 with two RBI while first basemen Robbie De La Cruz (UNLV) also drove in two runs.

North Division Playoff Preview

The Rochester Honkers, 1st Half North Champions, will take on the St. Cloud River Bats in the North Division Playoffs. The Honkers had their Playoff ticket punched after a 19-13 record in the 1st Half while the River Bats clinched their Playoff spot Sunday night with their win against the Honkers. St. Cloud and Willmar were battling for the final North Division spot, but Willmar lost their last two games in Thunder Bay while St. Cloud has won their last two games.

Astor Has Three Extra Base Hits

Jake Astor (Southern Arkansas) led the Waterloo Bucks to their final win of the season. Astor was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI in the 11-2 win over Eau Claire. Astor blasted two home runs, his 1st two of the season, and also doubled. The hard swinging lefty hit .289 on the season for Waterloo and had 16 extra base hits with 17 RBI. Matt Dittman (Illinois) led the Rochester Honkers to victory with his three-hit performance.

Beacom Mows Down Loggers

The Wisconsin Woodchuck tandem of Andrew Klausmeier and Mitchell Beacom pushed the ‘Chucks into the 2010 Playoffs. Beacom earned the save after throwing 3.0 innings in relief and only allowing one hit while striking out six Loggers. Beacom finished the regular season with a 1.08 ERA with six saves. Klausmeier also threw well and earned the win, his 5th of the season. The righty threw a two hitter threw 6.0 innings and struck out six in the win.

Sunday’s Action

The Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers beat the Duluth Huskies 12-7 on Sunday night as the two teams combined to knock out 34 hits. The Lunkers had 19 hits while the Huskies had 15, but committed two errors and walked four batters. Brainerd’s Stephen Wickens, TJ Berge and Tommy Reyes each had three hits while Hogan Jackson had two hits and drove in three runs in the victory. Mark Threlkeld hit his 10th home run of the season in the loss for the Huskies which ties him with Scott Schebler of the Green Bay Bullfrogs for the league lead.

Nivins Paces Border Cats

Tanner Nivins (Stony Brook) was perfect Sunday night against the Willmar Stingers. Nivins went 5-for-5 in the 7-3 win that eliminated the Stingers from post-season play in their inaugural season. The 5’10’’ infielder is currently hitting .308 with 36 RBI and 20 extra base hits. Nivins leads the Border Cats in batting average, slugging percentage, home runs and triples.

Haver Halts ‘Chucks

Jordan Haver had an impressive game on the mound Sunday night against a hot-hitting Wisconsin Woodchuck team. Haver, a righty, threw a complete game four hitter while earning his 4th win of the season. He struck out eight ‘Chucks batters while improving his ERA to 2.50. The Logger win over the Woodchucks kept the Madison Mallards playoff chances alive as they beat the Green Bay Bullfrogs.

The Wisconsin Woodchuck bats were hot Saturday night as they knocked out 20 hits in a 13-3 victory. Rob Lind led the way at the plate with a perfect 5-for-5 night with three runs scored and one RBI. Travis Whitmore and Jamie Bruno each had three hits while Brian Sharp knocked in three runs. Jason Martyn earned his 1st win of the season as he threw a six hitter thru 5.0 innings. Mick Doyle was 2-for-3 in the loss for the Loggers.

Lind Has Perfect Night At Plate

Rob Lind had an impressive night on Saturday as the Woodchucks beat the Loggers 13-3 at Athletic Park in Wausau, WI. Lind was a perfect 5-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI. He is currently hitting .327 with 74 hits while 15 of those have gone for doubles. Lind is 9 for his last 14 while the Woodchucks are 3-0 in those games.

Pappel Throws Gem for Thunder Bay

Corey Pappel (Cornell-NY) earned his 5th win of the season as he beat the Willmar Stingers 2-1 in Thunder Bay. Pappel threw a five hitter over 7.1 innings while striking out seven Stingers and only allowing one run. The 6’6’’ righty currently has a 3.63 ERA in 12 appearances.
