Recap of Wednesday’s Action

The Alexandria Beetles knocked out 19 hits in the first game of the double header as they beat the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers 13-2 at Stewart C. Mills Field. The Beetles six batters with multi-hit games and were led by Marcus Semien (California Berkeley) and Jake Tanis (Mercer) who both had three hits and three RBI. Starting pitcher Kevin Vangheluwe (Michigan) earned his 3rd win in relief throwing 5.0 innings of one run baseball. The Lunkers had five defensive miscues in the loss.

River Bats Release Names for Twins Alumni Game

The St. Cloud River Bats have announced the names of five players that will participate in the third annual Twin Alumni game on Aug. 28 at Joe Faber Field. Terry Steinbach, Juan Berenguer, Jarvis Brown, Al Newman and St. Cloud native Jim Eisenreich are slated to appear at the event.

Former Northwoods pitcher Chris Sale was promoted to the Major Leagues by the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday, August 4th. The 13th pick in the 2010 First-Year Major League Player Draft reaches the Majors quicker than any draftee since 2003.

Cubs Duo Promoted to Majors

Former Northwoods pitchers Casey Coleman and Thomas Diamond were promoted to the Major Leagues this week. The duo was called up to the Chicago Cubs from the Triple-A affiliate, Iowa Cubs, where the two were roommates. Coleman and Diamond were promoted to fill the spots of Ted Lilly, who was traded to the Dodgers, and Carlos Silva, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Semien Drives in Three in Win

All-Star short-stop Marcus Semien (California Berkeley) improved his average to .274 as he was 3-for-6 against the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers. Semien drove in three runs and had two doubles on the night to help the Beetles beat the Lunkers 13-2 in game one of a double header. The 6-foot, 180 pound slick fielding short-stop has 25 RBI on the season with 13 extra base hits.

Beck Throws No-Hitter

Sander Beck (Maryland) threw the 14th no-hitter in Northwoods League history Wednesday night. Beck threw a 7.0 no-hitter against the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers. The 6-foot-3, 215 pound righty earned his 5th win of the season as he struck out ten Lunkers. Beck only threw 94 pitches on the night while 63 of those pitches were for strikes.

NWL Games-Tuesday Night

The Green Bay Bullfrogs took game one of the double header 13-2 in Wisconsin Rapids thanks to 17 hits on the night. Leadoff hitter Daniel Putnam had four hits to pace Green Bay while Joel Hutter (Dallas Baptist) had two hits and drove in three runs. Riley Tincher (Wisconsin Whitewater) earned the win throwing 5.0 innings of two-hit baseball. Brian Embery (Wayland Baptist) homered in the loss for the Rafters.

Putnam Has Big Night for Bullfrogs

Daniel Putnam had a big day at the plate for the Green Bay Bullfrogs as they beat the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 13-2. The Bullfrog leadoff hitter was 4-for-5 on the night with two RBI. Putnam is currently hitting .381 on the season. Matt Dittman (Illinois) also had four hits as he led the Rochester Honkers to a 11-2 win over the Willmar Stingers.

Fuller Great in Relief

Trent Fuller of the La Crosse Loggers threw 6.2 innings in relief to help the Loggers beat the Waterloo Bucks’ Fuller only allowed one run on two hits while striking out nine in a 5-4 victory. The win marks the first for Fuller in 2010. He has pitched 17.1 innings and has 19 strikeouts for La Crosse. Corey Chaffins earned the win for Battle Creek as he led them to a 4-2 victory over Madison.

Recap of Monday’s Games

The Green Bay Bullfrogs took game one of the doubleheader 7-4 due to two big innings. The Bullfrogs center fielder Collin Kuhn (Arkansas) was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Green Bay’s pitching staff combined to throw a four hitter over the final 4.1 innings. The Bullfrogs touched up Rafter’s starting pitcher Kyle Anderson (California Poly San Louis Obispo) for six runs on eleven hits in just 3.1 innings.
