Sunday’s Games

The Rochester Honkers beat the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers 5-4 Sunday afternoon in front of 1,152 fans in extra innings. The Lunkers put up one run in the twelfth to break the tie at 3-3, but Rochester stormed back in the bottom of twelve to win 5-4. Both Andrew Mendenhall (Oregon) and Jimmy Waters (Kansas) scored on a Lunkers error to take the game. The Honkers Anthony Lopez (California State Los Angeles) earned the win in relief throwing 3.0 innings of one run baseball. The Lunkers Stephen Wickens (Florida Gulf Coast) homered in the loss.

Renfro Beats Stingers

Josh Renfro (State College of Florida) earned his third win of the season by beating the Willmar Stingers 5-0 in front of 1,107 NWL fans. Renfro threw an 8.0 inning shutout while scattering seven hits and striking out seven Stingers. Renfro currently has a 4.67 ERA in 44.1 innings pitched for the Huskies. He has a 3-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio in 2010.

Bruno Drives in Four

Vince Bruno (California Berkeley) of the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers had a three-hit day against the Thunder Bay Border Cats. Bruno led the Lunkers to a 11-6 win as he was 3-for-4 with one run scored and four RBI. The right fielder is currently hitting .246 with 11 extra base hits and 25 RBI. Jenzen Torres of the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters had two homeruns in a 5-4 loss to Madison.

Saturday’s Action

The Madison Mallards used a perfect night at the plate from Adam Davis (Illinois) to beat the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 5-4 in front of 6,750 NWL fans. Davis was 3-for-3 on the night with two runs scored, one RBI and a homerun. The Mallards pitching staff was excellent in relief registering the win and the save. Grant Gordon (Missouri State) threw 0.2 innings to earn the win with J.R. Graham (Santa Clara) throwing the final inning to get the save. Jenzen Torres (Cal Poly Pomona) had two homeruns on the night in the loss for the Rafters.

Teague Throws Shutout

Kyle Teague (Oakland) of the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers threw a gem in his last game of the 2010 season. Teague threw 8.0 innings of shutout baseball while only allowing two hits on the night. The righty ended the season with a 4-3 record with a 2.57 ERA. He struck out 55 batters in his 63 innings pitched for the Lunkers. Jason Wheeler (Loyola Marymount) improved to 7-0 as he beat the Alexandria Beetles.

Garcia Drives in Five

Jon Pierre Garcia (Southeastern CC) of the Madison Mallards knocked in five runs as the Mallards beat the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters Friday night. Garcia was 2-for-4 with a one run scored and hit his third homerun of the season. The righty from Brooklyn, NY has only played in 10 NWL games, but already has 11 RBI. Cody Asche (Nebraska) of the Duluth Huskies was 2-for-4 with a double and homerun in the Huskies win.

Recap of Friday’s Action

Waterloo jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings, but the Bullfrogs put up six runs in the third to take the lead 6-5 and eventually the game 7-5. The Bullfrogs scored six runs off All-Star pitchers Jared Wagoner (Butler) who took the loss. Justin Lambert earned the win while Brian Burgess earned his fifth save of the season. Landon Anderson (Dallas Baptist) was a perfect 3-for-3 in the loss for the Bucks.

Cardenas Shuts Down Waterloo

Felix Cardenas of the Eau Claire Express threw 7.0 innings of three-hit ball while shutting out the Waterloo Bucks. Cardenas improved to 4-3 on the 2010 season with a 2.18 ERA. He currently has pitched 53.2 innings for the Express while striking out 39. The Battle Creek Bombers Corey Chaffins (Eastern Michigan) earned his first win of the season by beating the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 4-0. Chaffins threw a complete game three hitter while striking out three.

Leyva Helps Stingers to Win

Carlo Leyva (Cal State Dominguez Hills) was 3-for-5 in an extra inning win for the Willmar Stingers. Leyva helped the Stingers beat the Huskies 10-9 in ten innings. The lefty scored three runs and stole a Willmar franchise record four bases. He currently is hitting .323 with 32 runs scored and 19 walks. Tom Barry (San Francisco) of the Green Bay Bullfrogs was a perfect 4-for-4 in the Bullfrog win.

Thursday’s Recap

The Battle Creek Bombers took game one of the doubleheader 4-0 at C.O. Brown Stadium. The Bombers received a great pitching performance from Corey Chaffins (Eastern Michigan) who threw a complete game three hitter. Battle Creek also got multi-hit games from Andrew Lawrence and Josh Lyon while Dan Dispensa drove in two runs. The Rafters Jenzen Torres (Cal Poly Pomona) had two hits in the loss.
