Conner Hulse (Harvard) threw 6.0 innings of scoreless baseball Monday night against the Willmar Stingers. The 6’2’’ righty gave up two hits and one walk while striking out four Stingers. Hulse moved to 1-1 on the 2010 season for the Huskies and now as a 3.94 ERA. In high school, Hulse was a member of two state championship teams and a runner-up finish.
Short-stop Stephen Wickens was 3-for-4 with a run scored in his first game of the season for the Lunkers. The Florida Gulf Coast product also had a stolen base on the day and helped lead Brainerd over Mankato 4-3. Wickens, a native of Ontario, rejoins the Lunkers after playing in Brainerd for the 2009 season. While at Florida Gulf Coast in 2010, Wickens hit .359 with 17 doubles and 34 RBI. He also had an outstanding .962 fielding percentage while starting 57 games on the season.
Alexandria 2, St. Cloud 1 The Alexandria Beetles took the game from the River Bats by a score of 2-1 at Knute Nelson Memorial Park in rain shortened game. The Beetles out hit the River Bats 6-2 and played error free baseball. Starting pitcher Andy Cox (Iowa Central CC) threw 5.0 innings of two hit baseball while striking out three. David Randall (Mercer) threw the final inning of no hit baseball.
Kyle Teague threw a 7.0 inning three hitter to help beat the Mankato MoonDogs. The Oakland University righty, struck out nine MoonDogs while keeping them to no runs. Teague received the no-decision, but put the Brainerd Area Lakes Lunkers in a great position for a win. Teague led Oakland University in wins in 2010 and led the team in innings pitched at 81.0 and games started.
Matt Johnson, an outfielder from California Baptist, was 2-for-4 for the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters tonight. He scored two runs, but more importantly had three RBI from his lead-off spot to beat the Woodchucks 7-5. Johnson started 54 games this season for the Cal Baptist Lancers and had double-digit extra base hits and 15 steals while playing center field.
Waterloo 2, Madison 1 The Mallards had their chances, but couldn’t cash in as the Waterloo Bucks avoid the sweep by winning 2-1 in front of 5,210 at the “Duck Pond.” Waterloo’s Phil Keppler (Iowa) picks up the win after pitching three innings of shut-out baseball while Luke Putz (Minnesota St.) pitched the eighth and ninth inning to earn his fourth save of the year.
Chris Licon (Lubbock Christian) led the Wisconsin Woodchucks over rival Wisconsin Rapids Rafters by a score of 2-0. Licon threw a complete game six-hit shutout while striking out five. The righty has a 2-0 record for the ‘Chucks with an ERA of 0.38 in 18.2 innings pitched.
The San Diego State product, Brandon Meredith, was 2-for-4 on the day and had an outstanding 4RBI with one run scored. Meredith hit a grand slam to lead the Loggers over the Green Bay Bullfrogs on Saturday. Meredith led San Diego State with a .383 batting average with 54 RBI and 18 extra-base hits. Meredith started in 50 of 51 games for the Aztecs in 2010.
La Crosse 6, Green Bay 2 The La Crosse Loggers used a two out grand slam in the seventh inning from Brandon Meredith (San Diego State) to break a 2-2 tie and eventually give the Loggers a 6-2 victory Saturday night over the visiting Green Bay Bullfrogs. The 2,730 fans in attendance at Copeland Park finally were able to witness the Loggers offense break open as the team collected 12 hits on the night.
Rochester Honker, Gabe Feldman, threw 8.0 innings giving up only three hits and two runs. Feldman held the MoonDogs down and let the Rochester offense win the game. Feldman was a 2007 and 2008 Under Armour Preseason All-American. The Wake Forest righty appeared in eight games for the Demon Deacons. He is currently 1-1 with a 2.35 ERA for the Honkers with 15.1 innings pitched.
