Former NWL Umpire Matt Schauffert was behind the plate for the MLB Futures Game Sunday (pictured above). He will also officiate the Home Run Derby Monday night.
Five of the six games played Monday night in the NWL were decided by two runs or less. Mankato (pictured) topped Rochester 4-3 in a afternoon affair.
It was Craig Gullickson’s afternoon at Jones Sign Field at Joannes Stadium as he outperformed Chase Porch with 8 innings of one-hit ball against the Alexandria Beetles on Sunday afternoon for a 1-0 victory. Gullickson (Clemson) fanned eight batters tying his season-high in strikeouts, which was recorded in his last outing. Throughout his eight innings on the hill, he tallied six 1-2-3 frames to earn his fourth win of the season and second consecutive.
Hunter Nolen (Northern Colorado) finished 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Lunkers to the 6-3 victory over the Duluth Huskies in Game One of their series at Mills Field. Nolen belted an RBI triple in the first to give the Lunkers their first lead, and followed with a single in the third. Then in the seventh, he busted the game open with his 2-RBI double to left-center that one-hopped the warning track. He also scored a run in the seventh, and had his hand in four of the six Lunker runs on the afternoon.
Green Bay is proud to announce that it will honor the 100,000th fan who attends a Bullfrogs’ game during this week’s four-game home stand, which starts on Sunday at 5:05 p.m.
Seven exciting games were played Sunday afternoon and evening across the upper Midwest in the NWL; highlighted by a walk-off Grand Slam in La Crosse (pictured).
The story of the night was the pitching by La Crosse starting pitcher Kyle Simon (Arizona). Simon pitched a complete game shutout allowing only three hits on the night to improve his record to 5-2. Simon put on quite a show for the 3,399 fans at Copeland Park with only one recorded out reaching the outfield. Besides the three hits allowed and the one out that left the infield, the remaining 26 outs were scattered between groundouts, infield pop outs, and strikeouts. The Loggers completed the two game series sweep over the visiting St. Cloud River Bats with the 6-0 victory.
Harold Riggins (NC State) belted his eighth home run of the year, a grand slam in the fifth to put the Mallards (25-17 overall, 6-2 second half) ahead for good en route to a 7-4 win. With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 5th the heavy-hitting Riggins stepped to the plate. With the first pitch he saw, the right-handed slugger deposited the baseball up and over the wall in left center field for a grand slam. In giving Madison a 6-0 lead, he also set the single-season franchise record for home runs in a season with his eighth long ball of the year. He surpassed Francois Larmore (Marshall) who hit seven homers back in 2003. Riggins needs just one more home run to set the franchise record for career homers. Riggins also singled and scored in the first inning to help the Mallards get off to a fast start. He finished the night 2-4 with two runs and two RBI.
The color “pink†will be in full effect on July 19th for Susan G. Komen for the Cure Night as the Madison Mallards don pink uniforms & use pink bats.
The Madison Mallards responded with a big win over Alexandria after blowing a ninth inning lead Friday night. La Crosse blanked Thunder Bay to remain in a tie with Madison for 1st place.
