The Duluth Huskies, or more specifically Maddox Meyer, have had the Minot Hot Tots’ number as of late. The freshman pitcher from Omaha was almost unhittable once again, leading the visiting Huskies to a 9-4 win.
Meyer was on fire from the first pitch, retiring the first seven batters he faced. He would throw five innings allowing two hits and one run while striking out seven.
The Huskies offense started fast as well, getting an RBI double from Ethan Surowiec in the first inning and a run-scoring groundout in the second inning. Duluth picked up the pace in the top of the fifth inning, scoring five runs on starting pitcher Kahler Key.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Tots got hot at the dish. Minot’s newcomer at shortstop, Ryan Castro, collected an RBI to get the Tots on the board. As the rain started falling again in the sixth, Henry Allen dropped a solo home run over the left field fence. The inning continued with Charlie Kalbrener reaching base on a dropped third strike and then scoring from third on a Max Ortega triple. After the extra-base hit, a rain delay put the gave on pause for about 15 minutes.
Out of the delay, it seemed like the Hot Tots might have had some momentum, but that changed in the eighth inning when Duluth stretched the lead again on a Surowiec home run. The Huskies took a 9-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth where the Hot Tots made one final effort at a win. Minot pushed across one run but stranded the bases loaded, bringing about the final.
Duluth’s 9-4 win continued the Huskies stretch of winning baseball. The ballclub has won nine of their last ten games and are two games above .500.
Henry Allen was the night’s SportClips MVP while reliever Jackson Duncan fired the SRT Fastest Pitch at 92 mph. Ortega’s triple was named the First Command Play of the Game. The Hot Tots drew five Buffalo Wild Wings Walks in the loss.
