Jason Leblebijian (Bradley) hit a game-tying triple in the fifth inning and Jake Stinnett (Maryland) followed with a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning to propel Willmar to a 5-3 victory over Alexandria Monday night.
Ricky Knapp (Florida Gulf Coast) picked up the victory for Stingers after going seven innings, only allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out six. The two runs allowed came on separate solo home runs by the Beetles. Jason West (Stephen F. Austin) picked up his first save of the year with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.
Down 1-0 in the fifth inning, Jordan Brown (Kansas) led the inning off with a walk. He then came around to score on a two-out triple by Leblebijian to tie the game.
In the sixth inning John Haberman (Pacific) reached base in front of Jake Stinnett, who then hit a two-run blast to right-center field to put the Stingers on top for the rest of the game.
Willmar added two runs in the seventh with an RBI-double by Leblebijian and an RBI base hit by Stinnett. Stinnett’s three RBIs give him five for the season. Leblebijian leads the team with six runs and six RBIs. Mitch Rowan (Willamette) went 3-for-4 in the game, while Brown went 2-for-3.
Willmar will play Alexandria again Tuesday night on the road before returning home to Bill Taunton Stadium to play Alexandria a third time on June 8. The first 250 kids 14 years of age and under will receive a free Stingers baseball courtesy of Arnold’s of Willmar. Gates open at 6 p.m.
