WILLMAR, MN- The Willmar Stingers announced today that seven players will be back with the organization as it opens up the second season of Northwoods League baseball in Willmar. Pictured above left to right top row: junior shortstop Carter Bell (Oregon State University), junior catcher Anthony Bemboom (Creighton University), sophomore third baseman Mitch Delfino (University of California), junior first baseman Eduardo Gonzalez (Alcorn State University). Bottom row left to right: junior pitcher Michael Jahns (Northwestern University), junior pitcher Jacob Barnes (Florida Gulf Coast University), and freshman outfielder Sean Dwyer (Florida Gulf Coast University).
A portion of the off-season for the Stingers involves putting together a 30-player roster for the 2011 season, anchored by a group of returners from the previous season. “The organization is excited to have this group back from the inaugural team, as we feel we can build a solid team around them.” Co-owner Marc Jerzak said.
The Inaugural season finished with a 39-31 overall record, missing the playoffs by percentage points in the final days of the season. “The season was a success and it would have been nice to make the playoffs, however, we have some keys players coming back and we’ll be ready to compete,” added Co-owner Ryan Voz.
One of those key players will be Dwyer who was offered a professional contract to sign with the San Diego Padres late in the summer. He was drafted in the 15th by the Padres in early June, and negotiated throughout the summer. Dwyer ultimately decided to attend college and for the time being forego the opportunity to play pro ball. He will be draft eligible again following his junior year for the Eagles.
The Stingers 2011 schedule will be released soon and will include a 70-game schedule in 75 days during the upcoming summer. Prices for season tickets are $149 for reserved seat backs and $169 for box seat season tickets.
