WILLMAR–In the rubber match of a three game set with the St. Cloud River Bats, the Stingers were unable to make it two straight wins as they fell 7-2 to their North Division rivals at Bill Taunton Stadium on Wednesday night. The loss drops the Stingers just one game above .500 overall and back to level in the second half of 2010, with a 3-3 record. Wednesday’s game was the final between these two clubs in Willmar this season with the only remaining contests coming up on August first and second.

Matt Collins made his debut for the Stingers as a starter on Wednesday and looked very solid, allowing just one unearned run on a pair of hits in four innings. Michael Jahns came on in Collins’ stead and was only able to register one out, getting the loss after allowing six runs, four earned, over that span. Jayson Huett looked stellar in his second straight relief appearance and one-time Stingers starter Jeff Barto pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to round out the Willmar side pitching-wise.

At the plate, it was not a particularly memorable night for the Stingers. The only runs came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Sean Dwyer scored after a bases loaded walk to Mikey Reynolds and Carlos Leyva brought home his 11th run of the season on an RBI fielder’s choice.

Next up for the 21-20 Stingers, it’s a four game road swing beginning with a pair in Rochester against the Honkers, the first of which gets underway from Mayo Field at 7:05 pm Thursday. Thanks to a pair of lengthy road trips and the All Star Break, the Stingers don’t have another home game until July 27th against the Alexandria Beetles.
