WILLMAR, Minn. — Jonny Ortiz has pitched well enough to win all three of his starts for the Stingers this summer, and Tuesday night against St. Cloud was no different.

Ortiz (Nova Southeastern) threw seven quality innings for Willmar, but suffered his first defeat of the year as the Stingers offense couldn't solve the Rox's pitching staff in a 3-2 loss at Bill Taunton Stadium.

Willmar (13-15) fought back from two separate one-run deficits to draw even with the first-place Rox (19-8), but St. Cloud scored a single run in the seventh inning to take the lead for good.

Trailing 1-0 going to the bottom of the second, the Stingers manufactured their first run thanks to some heads-up base running by Devin Foyle (Kansas). Foyle reached on a walk with one out and then stole second and went to third on the same play thanks to a Rox throwing error with Luke Becker (Kentucky) at the plate. Becker then singled Foyle home to tie the score at one.

The Rox scored a run of their own in the next half inning, but the Stingers immediately tied the score at two with another run in the bottom of the third. Dylan Woods (Nova Southeastern) led off the frame with a single, and eventually scored later in the inning on Justin Toerner's (Cal State Northridge) RBI single.

The Stingers couldn't muster any more offense over the final six innings against the Rox, which came in with the second-lowest team ERA in the Northwoods League.

Jake Rothwell (Daytona State) was superb out of the bullpen for the Stingers, retiring all six men he faced in the eighth and ninth innings.

The Stingers continue the homestand against the Rox with a doubleheader on Wednesday, with 1:05 p.m. day game and 7:05 p.m. night cap.
