(Willmar, M.N.)- The Stingers stuck to their same script as they took down Rochester to sweep the Honkers in a two-game series.
Early runs, great defense and steady pitching continues to be the formula for Willmar as they top Rochester for the fourth time this season.
In the first, the Stingers started strong as Zane Denton cracked an RBI single into left field. Willmar followed it up with two more runs as Wilber scored on an error and Cesar Lopez drove in a run with a base hit. 3-0 Stingers early.
Starting pitching once again proved effective for the Stingers as Jack Zigan turned in a quality performance, going six innings, allowing one run on five hits and three strikeouts.
Willmar added two runs in the fourth after Rochester grabbed a run in the top half of the inning. Kyle Manzardo and Tyler Wilber hit back-to-back RBI singles to extend the Stinger lead to four.
In relief, Jonathan Brand continued to his solid string of appearances, going two innings without allowing a run and striking out three.
The Willmar defense played a big part in their win as well. Asa Awbrey made a sprawling catch in left in the the first to prevent and extra base hit and Brooks Lee made a nice spinning plate short that ended a Rochester inning.
Pitching held strong into the ninth as Tanner Brown came in to finish the game. He gave up a base hit, but ultimately struck out the side to end it. He now has 15 strikeouts on the season, best in the Minnesota/Iowa Pod.
Stingers grab their tenth win of the season and move the win streak to eight straight games. Rochester falls to 2-6.
Next official game for the Stingers is Saturday night in Mankato for their first matchup of the year with the MoonDogs. First pitch is set for 6:35 pm.
