WILLMAR, MN – The Willmar Stingers handled business tonight blanking the Mankato MoonDogs, 12-0.
The Stingers were able to take advantage of an error-filled effort from the MoonDogs and capitalized on them as they won comfortably.
Mankato committed seven errors throughout the game which led to their downfall. Although Willmar was able to score 12 runs, only three of them were earned.
Willmar started off hot with three runs in the bottom of the first. Jakob Christian hit his second double of the season sending home Joey Walls. Christian and Kyle Payne were both able to come home on misfires from the MoonDogs on the field.
The scoring would continue in the next inning when Drey Dirksen was able to beat out an infield single scoring Brett Bateman, 4-0.
The game would be put out of reach in the bottoms of the sixth and seventh innings when the Stingers were able to score four runs in back-to-back innings. Highlights of the innings included Scott Anderson’s two-run double in the sixth and Jake Entrekin’s solo homer in the seventh.
This was the second game this season that all three of Willmar’s Point Loma Sea Lions were all in the lineup. They accounted for five of the eight RBIs in the game for the Stingers.
The MinnWest Technology Campus Player of the Game went to starting pitcher Ryan Jares. Jares went seven innings without giving up a run. He struck out six batters in his win tonight. The Augustana product now holds a record of 2-0 and has an ERA just above two at 2.12.
The 13-10 Willmar Stingers now hold a two-game lead over the 11-12 Mankato MoonDogs for second place in the Great Plains West. Tomorrow, the Stingers will travel to Mankato for the second game of the home-and-home series as Willmar will be looking for the sweep at ISG Field.
