ALEXANDRIA, MN – The Alexandria Beetles defeated the Eau Claire Express tonight, 5-2.

The Willmar Stingers traveled to Alexandria for their seventh annual Beetles Night as they paid tribute to a historic Northwoods League city.

Willmar wore purple and yellow jerseys and rebranded as the Alexandria Beetles for the night and was victorious in front of their home crowd at Knute Nelson Memorial Ballpark:

The Express were able to score first when a wild pitch sent home first baseman Joe Yorke in the top of the first.

The Beetles would tie the game in the bottom of the second when Josh Fitzgerald hit a double sending home Jakob Christian. Fitzgerald was tonight’s MinnWest Technology Campus Player of the Game. He went 1-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Alexandria would capture the lead in the fifth inning after Drey Dirksen was able to send home Aidan Byrne with two outs.

Eau Claire responded fairly quickly tying the game with two runs each when Jake Sapien brought a runner home in the top of the sixth.

The Beetles would go on to win after scoring a run in the seventh and tacking on two insurance runs in the eighth to finish the game on top. Joey Walls sent home Dalton Pearson in the seventh and Fitzgerald and Byrne both got RBIs in the eighth.

The win would go to relief pitcher Tucker Novotny and John Bezdicek would earn his second save.

The Beetles will go back to being the Stingers tomorrow as they prepare for a four-game road trip to Bismarck to take on the Larks.
