Huskies grab 15th win to stay in first place

The Duluth Huskies used stellar pitching and early offense to take down the La Crosse Loggers in a 5-1 win on Tuesday night. With the win, the Huskies (15-6) stay in first place in the North Division, while La Crosse (10-10) falls to .500 on the year.

Duluth took the lead in the first inning, scoring three runs against La Crosse starter Chas Sagedahl (Southeastern CC). First, it was an RBI triple by Kyle Jacobsen (South Carolina) that put the Huskies on the board. Moments later, Jacobsen scored on an RBI groundout by Chris Gilbody (Georgetown College), whose 13-game hitting streak came to an end tonight.

The final run of the frame came across thanks to an RBI single by the newest Husky Justin Mitchell (Oklahoma), making it 3-0 Duluth through one inning of play.

On the mound, the Huskies turned to right-hander Matt Mogollon (Chapman University) for his third start of the season.

Mogollon tossed a gem for Tyger Pederson’s club, surrendering one run on two hits while striking out six Loggers in seven innings of work.

In his outing, Mogollon pitched a one-two-three inning in all but one frame of the contest. It was the fourth inning that La Crosse would produce its first and only offense of the night.

Mogollon was in a bases loaded jam with one out as Shane McGuire (San Diego) drove in the lone run of the night for the Loggers. Another run would have scored had it not been for a phenomenal throw by Julian Escobedo (San Diego State) in center to throw out a runner at home plate.

The Duluth offense added two more runs in the home half of the fourth to take a commanding 5-1 lead. First, an RBI single by Augie Isaacson (Friends University) drove in Mitchell to score.

Moments later, the final run of the night came in to score on an RBI single by Nick Sogard (Loyola Marymount) that brought in Trevin Esquerra (Loyola Marymount).

In the eighth inning, Duluth pitching coach Marcus Pointer turned to relief pitcher Tyler Cassmeyer (Lindenwood University).

The Huskies right-hander tossed two innings of scoreless relief, allowing no hits and only one base-runner while fanning four Loggers.

The Duluth pitching staff’s dominant performance resulted in only one run allowed on two hits while striking out 10 batters. The unit maintains their league-leading strikeout total that now stands at 206 on the year.

The Huskies return to action tomorrow as they host the Loggers once again, who will look to bounce back from tonight’s loss. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
