The Duluth Huskies (10-7) split Monday’s home doubleheader against the La Crosse Loggers (6-12), winning the first of two seven-inning games 3-1, and dropping the second by a score of 9-3.
Piero Amador (4-1) picked up a win in his final start as a Husky with a truly dominant performance. He didn’t allow a baserunner until the fourth, and took a no-hitter into the sixth. The only La Crosse run on the day was unearned, and the hit that broke up the no-no was the only Logger hit of the day. Sam Messina (1-2) produced a solid start, giving up three earned runs over five innings, but was ultimately out-dueled by Amador.
The Husky bats came out firing on all cylinders and capitalized on back-to-back walks to Jordan Hovey and Isaac Collins. Kyle Hubbuch drove in Hovey with a sacrifice fly, and Luke Roskam doubled two pitches later to score Collins. In the second, the Huskies tacked on another on a triple off the top of the right field wall by Hovey to score Jake Smith, who singled to lead off the inning. That was all the scoring by Duluth in game one. Grant Ford pitched a scoreless sixth in relief of Messina.
La Crosse didn’t get a run across until the seventh. Garrett Christman drove in Luke Rasmussen with two outs in the seventh on an error by Huskies right fielder Alec Abercrombie, which spelled the end of the day for Amador. Tre Brown struck out Jeremy Ydens swinging to put a bow on game one.
