A life of baseball and loving it.
The love of baseball goes further than just the guys playing on the turf. It has gone as far as the owner Mike Rosenzweig’s son Sam Rosenzweig. Sam started his love for the game at an early age of 12. “I got my start in baseball by chalking the lines and raking at Central Little League,”. Sam also got first hand experience with the Duluth Huskies Baseball Club, “I was a bit of a jack of all trades. I worked concessions, tickets, in the pro shop, camera operator, scorekeeper, mascot, and clubhouse manager.” Sam was on the Huskies Intern roster from 2011-2014. He is now graduated from Minnesota State Mankato and is working at Fresno State University as an Equipment Room Attendant. It is evident that the love of the sport is common in the Rosenzweig household.
With his job, comes a lot of responsibilities with more experience than he ever thought was possible. Sam is in charge of baseball, lacrosse, and soccer. “I do ordering of all gear and equipment that you see an athlete and coach in. Socks to hats, bags to balls and everything in between. Coordinating with our screen printer and embroiderer. We are also in charge of all laundry (practice, lifting, uniform, etc.) and equipment upkeep. I also oversee central receiving for athletics, so every package that comes to athletics comes through me.” With every job comes the likes of it and the dislikes. As for the things he enjoys it shows just how kind of a person he is and how caring he has become to the coaches and athletes that he personally works with. “It’s pretty rewarding to see an athlete continue on in their sport and knowing I had a small part in getting them there.” The kindness goes further when asked what his dislikes are “I know this sounds corny but I really enjoy all the aspects of my job, having new problems that come up and challenge my knowledge is what makes it great.”
Most that have a career in athletics, start off being an athlete themselves and that is exactly what Sam did by playing baseball through high school and transitioning into a student baseball manager position while attending college at Minnesota State Mankato.
Sam also had a little advice for those starting out and wanting to go into the sports career world. With his biggest piece being knowing how much time and commitment it takes to be successful. “You have to be willing to sacrifice time and effort, lose sleep, miss holidays, and be willing to be all in.” With a little mention of how it helps to know the right people in this business and never be afraid to make your network circle bigger.
His future goals include hopefully becoming a power five school equipment manager or baseball only equipment manager. Sam also mentioned with having this big dream he also really likes his job now and plans on staying there for a bit of time.” I really like where I am at and have enjoyed the new challenges of being at the Division I level.” With not knowing exactly what the future holds for himself, Sam knows one thing for sure that without his past experiences he wouldn’t be in the position he is today.
