The Kalamazoo Growlers (31-33, 10-18) rode strong performances on both sides of the ball to a 10-1 win over the Richmond Flying Mummies (26-37, 9-18) on Friday night.

Nick Frontino started the scoring, smacking a two-run home run in the first inning to put the Growlers up 2-0.

The Growlers plated two more runs in the second inning across while Isaac Scavarda cruised on the mound.

The Flying Mummies found their first hit of the night in the fourth inning, scoring Prince DeBoskie from third base. Scavarda wiggled out of any other trouble, maintaining a 4-1 lead.

The slim lead wouldn’t last long. DeMir Heidelberg left the yard for the first time this season, bringing in two runs and extending the lead to 6-1.

“I was joking with the guys saying that Cecil Fielder is here tonight so I have to hit a pump,” Heidelberg said. “I felt great at the plate today.”

Scavarda exited after five innings, while Preston Cosby, Sam Beemer and Gavin Jones combined for four scoreless innings in relief.

“We got out to a lead for the first time in a while and Isaac gave us five really good innings,” manager Cody Piechocki said. “We played with a lot better attitude tonight.”

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Phillip Thigpen brought in a run via sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, Heidelberg left the yard again, this time for three runs, cementing the 10-1 score.

Heidelberg ended the night 2-for-5 while driving in five runs and scoring twice. The Eastern Michigan product had not left the yard prior to tonight’s game.

Kalamazoo is back in action on the road in Battle Creek on Saturday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EDT.
