Series previewKalamazoo, Mich. – The Kalamazoo Growlers will begin their toughest part of the season as they embark on a four-game road trip against the La Crosse Loggers and the Lakeshore Chinooks. Followed by a two-game home stand before traveling back out on the road for yet another four-game road trip.

PROBABLE STARTERS

Friday, June 20: Luke Bolka (0-1, 10.56 ERA) vs. Ty Provencher (1-0, 0.00 ERA)

The freshman from Eastern Carolina has pitched in five games this season as this will be his third start. The crafty lefty in his last outing against the Green Bay Bullfrogs earned the win by pitching in relief, going just 1.1 IP, allowing three runs on two hits. Bolka's best start at the beginning of the year against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters as he went three innings, giving up just four hits and striking out five.

Saturday, 21: Dillon Haviland (2-2, 4.59 ERA)  vs. Grant Yost (2-0, 4.26 ERA)

Dillon Haviland (Duke) will be making his third straight start and seventh appearance of the season. The strong left-hander has command of the plate and can fool hitters with his breaking ball. In his first start against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters, he was brilliant lasting seven innings, allowing just one run on seven hits and struck out five.

Lineups will be posted on Facebook and Twitter prior to first pitch.

This will be the first time these two teams have played each other. The Growlers will go against the Loggers eight more times during the season.

 GAME NOTES

  • The Growlers are coming off a series split against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. Game one of the series showed offensive fireworks as both teams combined to score 25 runs, the second most total combined runs scored in a Northwoods League game this season. Game two featured a pitching duel as Ryan Smoyer (Notre Dame) shut down Rafters hitters to earn the victory.
  • This series will feature the two most potent offenses in the Northwoods League. The Growlers are leading the lead in batting average (.275). La Crosse is third in the league with a .269 team batting average.
  • Jared Kujawa (Western Michigan) has done nothing but hit the ball extremely well, as he is riding a four-game hit streak. The highlight was on Wednesday June 18 against the Rafters, when he hit a pinch-hit grand slam. He has also registered an RBI in three of the past four games for the Growlers.
  • Joshua Buchalski (Michigan State) has been a solid option for the Growlers out of the bullpen and has been able to strike out batters with ease. His 21 strikeouts leads the Growlers and is 11th in the Northwoods League.
  • The Growlers at 10-14 are currently seventh in the South Division. The La Crosse Loggers are 15-8 and currenlty just a half game back of the top spot in the South Division.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

  • The Growlers will be faced with quite a challenge as after taking on the Loggers, will travel to Lakeshore to take on the Chinooks. The Growlers did not fair well agains the Chinooks in their first meeting, getting swept and manufacturing just three runs in the two game series.
  • The Growlers will be back home for a quick two-game home stand against the other new team in the Northwoods League the Kenosha Kingfish. On Tuesday June 24, its Tuesday Brewsday with half off Bells Brewery beer. Wednesday June 25, is the Growlers halfway to christmas night as fans will attempt to build the World's Largest Field Snowman!
