The Kalamazoo Growlers (32-33, 11-18) rode strong pitching to a 6-3 win over the Battle Creek Battle Jacks (21-43, 9-20) on Saturday night.

Jeremiah Holder started the strong performance, going five innings while allowing two runs. Behind him, the Kalamazoo offense scored four runs before his exit, taking a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning.

Aidan Liedeke made his season debut in the sixth inning, throwing three scoreless innings on just 32 pitches.

In the top of the ninth inning, two insurance runs scored, giving the Growlers a 6-2 advantage.

The first two outs in the bottom of the ninth were courtesy of Sam Beemer, while one unearned run scored. Beemer left the game with the tying run at the plate, when Kael Gahan entered.

Gahan threw three pitches and struck out Thomas Cooper to end the game.

Offensively, Kalamazoo was led by Josh Algarin, who went 3-for-6 with two runs and two doubles.

“I’ve been hitting the ball hard, it’s just been right at guys,” Algarin said. “Thankfully, today, the hits found holes.”

The win moves Kalamazoo just one game below .500 with seven games remaining. The Growlers and Battle Jacks are back in action on Sunday night, with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m. EDT.
