KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Kalamazoo Growlers (34-35, 13-20) rode a strong start to a 10-8 win against the Richmond Flying Mummies (27-42, 10-23) on Wednesday.

Henry McDonald ignited a four-run second inning for Kalamazoo, with the Growlers taking a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning, Liam Golden walked in a run, but escaped trouble. The Kalamazoo offense then added a run with DeMir Heidelberg driving in a run. After five innings, the Growlers led 5-1.

Brock Sell hit a home run to lead off the sixth inning. Kalamazoo added two more runs, taking a commanding 8-1 lead.

However, Richmond didn’t give up. The Flying Mummies scored six runs across the seventh and eighth innings, including a three-run Drew Phillips home run.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Heidelberg left the yard, adding two runs of insurance to give the Growlers a 10-7 lead.

Gavin Jones closed things out allowing just one run.

Golden saved his best start of the season for his last, throwing 6 1/3 innings while allowing three runs and striking out eight.

“I just wanted to give it my all,” Golden said. “It was my last start in the ‘Zoo and I’ve really loved my time here.”

The win moves Kalamazoo one game below .500 with three games remaining. The Growlers are back in action on Thursday night against the Flying Mummies, with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. EDT.
