(Mankato, MN)—The Mankato MoonDogs, a member of the Northwoods League, announced today that field manager Jason Nell will not be returning to the MoonDogs helm in 2009. Nell’s decision is based on new commitments to his current coaching and teaching positions at Iowa Lakes Community College and his family.

"I really enjoyed my time in Mankato and was looking forward to coming back for a fifth season, but sadly I will be unable to continue my tenure as head coach,” Nell said.

Nell’s success as field manager in Mankato was unprecedented. His accolades in 2008 alone set him apart from all others in MoonDogs history. He was named field manager of the North Division in the NWL All-Star game, won his 100 career NWL game, led the MoonDogs to their first ever playoff berth, and was named 2008 NWL Manager of the Year. Nell stands at 108 wins overall in his three year tenure as field manager (8th in NWL history) and has coached nearly 30 players that were selected in the Major League Baseball amateur draft.

"My passion, desire, and will to coach for Mankato continues. However, being a teacher and a coach, I have to fulfill prior commitments at the institution I serve. I would like to thank Joe, Kyle, and the entire staff for giving me a great opportunity and making it an enjoyable place to work,” coach Nell said. "Lisa, myself, Gracie, and (Chloe) will be forever grateful to the staff, the city of Mankato, and MoonDog fans for their support. Mankato truly has been a second home to us and to that we offer our sincerest appreciation. My family and I will watch and listen, along with the greatest fans in the league, as we wish Mankato continued success.”

"It’s a big loss for us here in the MoonDogs office. Jason has become as big a part of our MoonDogs family as anyone. His contributions to the MoonDogs over the past 4 seasons both on and off the field have been tremendous,” said MoonDogs general manager Kyle Mrozek. "We’re disappointed we can’t have him back for another season but also understand why Iowa Lakes wants him to remain on campus more.”

Jason will be entering his 8th season of head coaching at Iowa Lakes and his 13th overall at the collegiate level. Over that time, he has produced 5 All-Americans and recorded nearly 200 victories. He currently resides in Wallingford with his wife Lisa, his daughter Gracie, 2, and his newborn daughter Chloe.

With the departure of Nell, the MoonDogs front office once again will resume a search for the next head coach of the MoonDogs. Already fielding several applications from members of the Northwoods League and the MoonDogs coaching staff, the MoonDogs hope to name the 2009 field manager within the next few weeks.
