Willmar, Minn. — A four-game winning streak isn't an everyday occurrence, especially when all of those wins come against the same team.
But that's what the Stingers accomplished Wednesday night at Bill Taunton Stadium, as they knocked off Alexandria 7-4 in the night cap of the day-night doubleheader to sweep the twin bill and the four-game set.
After a back-and-forth affair in the first game of the doubleheader that saw the Stingers (40-20, 17-9 second half) hold on to a one-run lead to win in Alexandria, Willmar led wire-to-wire in the finale, as well.
A three-run second inning for the Stingers proved to be too much for the Blue Anchors (25-37, 13-14 second half) to overcome. Willmar needed just two hits in the frame to score the runs, as it took advantage of more free passes from Alexandria. Troy Dixon singled to start the rally and Lucas Tancas walked after that to give the Stingers runners on the corners with no outs. Two batters later Tyler Leffler singled into left field to give the Stingers a lead they would never relinquish. Tancas scored later in the inning on a throwing error, and Storm Wilson drove in the first of his three runs with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.
That was enough of a cushion for Willmar starter Zach Strecker, who combined with three relievers to strand 16 Blue Anchors on base, a season-high left stranded for the Stingers' pitching staff. Strecker stranded two each in the first, second, fifth and sixth innings. Then Dakota Belter came out of the bullpen with the bases loaded in the seventh and got a fielder's choice ground out to preserve what was a 6-4 lead at the time.
Brady Anderson locked down his second save of the day in the ninth inning to give him 15 for the season, tying his own record for most saves in a single season by a Stingers pitcher.
The Stingers continue the five-game homestand on Thursday night, as they take on the La Crosse Loggers for the sixth annual "Jerseys off our Backs Night."
