MANKATO, Minn. — The Stingers were in a familiar spot on Sunday, and this time they got the job done.
Playing in its second-straight extra inning game, Willmar scored two runs in the top of the 13th inning and held on for a 5-3 win over Mankato at Franklin Rogers Park, giving the Stingers their fourth-straight win over the MoonDogs (8-5) dating back to last season.
Willmar (6-7) scored the go-ahead runs in the 13th all without the benefit of a base hit. Eddie Estrada (Minnesota) started off the 13th inning with a walk, and Ty Tice then tried to sacrifice bunt but wound up at first base after a MoonDogs’ error. Quincy McAfee tried to do the same but another error helped bring both Estrada and Tice around to score to make it a Stingers’ lead for good.
The Stingers were the ones that struck for the first runs of the game, tallying single runs in the second and third innings to make it a 2-0 lead.
In his first start of the year, Brad Schaenzer (Kentucky) had one of the most dominating starts of the season so far. He struck out 10 in five innings of two-hit work and allowed just one run. That start earned him Northwoods League Pitcher of the Night.
After a single run in the third, the MoonDogs plated two in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead.
But the Stingers wouldn’t go away easily and tied the game at three in the eighth.
The Stingers pitching staff then set the stage for the eventual game-winning runs in the 13th inning. Joe Vranesic (Kent State) threw a scoreless inning in the eighth and Max Green went 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Jayce Vancena (Michigan) then finished it off, stranding the bases loaded in the 11th and the bases loaded in the 13th to preserve the win.
The Stingers now return home for two-straight games against the MoonDogs, with Books and Baseball Night presented by Early Childhood Initiative scheduled for Monday. The first 250 families with a child four years of age and under receive a book and will be able to read with players on the field.
