DULUTH, Minn. – Scott Lieser (St. Cloud State) pitched a complete-game shutout in game one, and the Willmar Stingers won the second contest in 10 innings to sweep a doubleheader against the Duluth Huskies, 1-0 and 3-2, Wednesday night at Wade Stadium in Duluth, Minn. The Stingers improved their winning streak to five games with the victories.

Sean Dwyer (Florida Gulf Coast) went a combined 3-for-7 at the plate, while Anthony Bemboom (Creighton) had the only RBI of the first game. In the second game, Pat Stover (Santa Clara) and Jarid Scarafiotti (Stephen F. Austin) had the Stingers’ two RBIs.

In game one, Willmar was outhit 9-4, but Mitch Delfino (California) led off the second inning with a walk and scored on the next batter when Bemboom doubled to left for the only run the Stingers would need. Lieser scattered nine hits and one walk while striking out four in seven innings.

In the nightcap, Willmar fell behind 2-0 in the fifth, but responded with two runs in the sixth inning on back-to-back bases-loaded walks by Stover and Scarafiotti to tie the game. In the 10th inning, Scarafiotti earned a leadoff walk. Bemboom pinch ran for Scarafiotti and scored from first when John Haberman (Pacific) hit a fly ball to left field with two outs that Andrew Dixon dropped to end the game.

Kody Gorden (Western Nevada College) started the game on the mound and pitched 5 1/3 strong innings, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Kurt Spomer (Creighton) entered the game with two on, nobody out in the seventh, but ended the inning with a 6-4-3 double play followed by a groundout to first   Dan Russell (Western Illinois) earned the victory with a perfect 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 10th. The Stingers were the home team for the second contest because it was a makeup of the game postponed in Willmar July 14.

The Stingers will play Duluth for the final time of the 2011 season Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Willmar will then return home for a three-game homestand, beginning with Diamond Dig Night presented by Elmquist Jewelers & Q102. The first 125 women will receive a scoop, and 250 women will compete to find a $1,000 diamond hidden in the infield dirt after the game.
