Sunday’s NWL Games

Sunday afternoon’s game featuring the Willmar Stingers and Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers was a hit fest. The two teams combined for 32 hits and 15 runs. The Stingers one thru four hitters were a combined 14-for-20 with ten RBI and six runs scored. Carlos Leyva (Cal State Dominguez), Isaac Ballou (Marshall), Jared Norris (Oregon State) and Jordan Smith (St. Cloud State) combined to have one of the best offensive nights this season in the NWL. Matt Collins (Central Florida) earned his second win of the season with a 6.0 inning three strikeout performance. Chadd Krist was 3-for-4 for the Lunkers in the loss.

Ballou Helps Beat Brainerd

The Stingers Isaac Ballou (Marshall) had an amazing game from the second spot in the lineup on Sunday afternoon. Ballou was 4-for-6 with two runs scored and six RBI. Ballou, along with the other three batters at the top of the line-up were a combined 16-for-20 with six runs scored and 10 RBI. Ballou helped beat the Brainerd Lunkers by a score of 11-4 at Stewart C. Mills Field. Stinger teammate Carlos Leyva (Cal State Dominguez) had four hits on the night as well.

Arreola Throws Gem

Jesse Arreola (California Baptist) improved to 3-3 on the season with a great pitching performance Sunday afternoon. Arreola threw 7.2 innings of five-hit baseball while only allowing one run and striking out five. The lefty currently has a 4.32 ERA in 33.1 innings pitched for the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. His performance helped beat the Eau Claire Express by a score of 8-1.

Saturday’s Review

The La Crosse Loggers were behind 3-0 after the third inning against the Madison Mallards, but the Mallards were too much to handle on Saturday. The Mallards Adam Davis (Illinois) had three RBI in the win while Mallards second basemen Reed Gragnani (Virginia) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Madison’s starter Matt Morgan (Purdue) earned the win throwing 6.0 innings of one run baseball.

Dwyer Does It All

The Willmar Stingers Sean Dwyer (Florida Gulf Coast) was 4-for-6 with three runs scored and four RBI. Dwyer helped the Stingers beat the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers 11-4 in front of 336 dedicated fans. Dwyer's four-hit night was coupled with NWL batting average leader Jordan Smith's (St. Cloud State) four-hit performance. Dwyer also hit his third homerun of the season and improved his average to .310.

Stassi Shuts Down Waterloo

Brock Stassi (Nevada) improved his record to 2-1 on the season with a 2.70 ERA with the win over the Waterloo Bucks by a score of 7-0. Stassi threw 7.0 innings while only giving up four-hits and zero runs. Stassi helped lead the pitching staff to a complete game six hitter. The 6’2’’ lefty was 7-4 in 2010 with a 3.43 ERA in 78.2 innings pitched for the Nevada Wolfpack.

Recap of Friday’s Games

The Green Bay Bullfrogs took game one of the doubleheader by a score of 4-1 over the La Crosse Loggers on Friday. The Bullfrogs went ahead 4-0 after two innings and never looked back. Green Bay’s first basemen Troy Scott (Washington) was 1-for-3 with a three run homer. Owen Jones (Portland) earned the win while Logger Kodey Simon (Winona State) took the loss.

Smith Shines for Stingers

Jordan Smith (St. Cloud State) of the Willmar Stingers continued his league leading hitting with a 3-for-4 night against the Duluth Huskies. The 2010 All-Stars performance helped the Stingers beat the Duluth Huskies 6-5. Smith also had a triple, three RBI and a walk in the victory. Smith currently is hitting .400 in 170 at-bats this year. Steve Nyistzor (Rutgers) of the St. Cloud River Bats had four hits in a 10-1 victory.

Logger Langfield Earns Complete Game Win

Dan Langfield (Memphis) improved to 4-0 on the season for the La Crosse Loggers in a 2-0 victory over the Green Bay Bullfrogs. Langfield threw a complete game one-hitter while striking out ten Bullfrogs. Langfield currently boasts a 1.98 ERA with 48 strikeouts in 41 innings pitched. Rochester Mike Strong (Oklahoma State) threw 7.0 innings of three hit baseball to earn the win over the Mankato MoonDogs.

NWL Back to Action After All-Star Break

The Mankato MoonDogs took a 2-0 lead over the Rochester Honkers in the first inning and never gave up that lead. The Honkers scored one run in the fourth when Jimmy Waters (Kansas) hit a solo homerun. The MoonDog got a great pitching performance from starter Logan Odom (USC) who earned the win and Blake Schwartz (Minnesota Mankato) who got the save. Odom threw 5.2 innings while surrendering one run and Schwartz gave up zero hits over the final 3.1 innings. MoonDog All-Star Jordan Steranka (Penn State) was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a homerun.
