TODAY’S STORYLINES

ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER WIN: The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders used two home runs along with five shutout innings from starter Austin Wagner on Monday night to win their fourth straight game, winning 4-2 on the road against the Green Bay Rockers. Cole Messina and Evan Smith each hit a home run for the Dock Spiders, while the pitching staff struck out 13. Eight of the nine Dock Spiders in the order reached base, led by Messina, Smith and Garrett Cutting, who each reached base twice.

ALLERGIC TO SINGLES: With two extra-base hits on Monday night, Cole Messina has now tallied five extra-base hits in the last two games. Each of his last five hits have gone for extra-bases. Over that span, he’s gone 5-9 at the plate with two doubles, a triple, two home runs and eight RBI. The five extra base-hits are the most by a Dock Spiders hitter over a two-game span this year. On Sunday, he was a single away from becoming the first Dock Spider to hit for the cycle.

BACK AT HOME: Today’s game marks the first of a five game home stand for the Dock Spiders, tied for the longest of the 2022 season. Tonight’s game is the only one in the home stand against a Great Lakes West Division opponent, as they’ll face the Kalamazoo Growlers and Kokomo Jackrabbits from the Great Lakes East Division over the next four games.

WHAT A STREAK: When Austin Wagner issued a walk in the fifth inning of Monday night’s game, it marked the first one he’s allowed on the year after 26 innings on the mound. Wagner became the last qualified pitcher across the Northwoods League to allow a walk, and he leads the entire league in K/BB ratio (27/1). The 26 innings is the longest before a walk by any NWL pitcher this year.

THE OLE MISS CONNECTION: On Sunday afternoon, the Ole Miss Rebels won their first Men’s College World Series title over the Oklahoma Sooners, sweeping the best-of-three finals series. The Rebels roster featured 10 former and current Dock Spiders, including two-year Dock Spiders star Tim Elko. Elko appeared in 85 games for the Dock Spiders between the 2019 and 2020 season, hitting eight home runs in 2020, the second-most in a single season in franchise history. That same day, former Ole Miss Rebel and former Dock Spiders catcher Nick Fortes hit a walk-off home run for the Miami Marlins to beat the New York Mets.

TODAY’S STARTING PITCHING MATCH-UP

LHP DAVIS ROKOSE (FDL): Rokose is set to make his second start after he’s allowed two unearned runs over his last two appearances. Rokose has made six career starts, with five of them coming last summer in the Sunbelt League.

LHP JUSTIN LOER (GB): Today marks the fifth start of the year for Loer after he allowed a season-high six runs to Lakeshore in his last start. Today also marks his first road start. In his four starts, he’s struck out at least six in every one, which puts him in eighth across the league with 30 strikeouts.
