Catching Up with Duncan Hunter (2019 Dock Spider) from Jacksonville University
1) How did you first hear about the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders and learn about an opportunity of competing for them?
I first learned of the Dock Spiders through my teammate Zach Bryant. He played with the club for a few years and had a good deal of success. He would always tell me how much he enjoyed his time in Fond du Lac. When my assistant coach gave me the option to go to Fondy, I couldn’t wait to take the opportunity.
2) What was your favorite moment from the 2019 season?
Definitely going on the run late in the season. Our nine game win streak at the end was the most fun I have had playing summer baseball. Winning the last game against Madison really allowed us to end the season on a positive note. Also, playing in Fondy allowed me to meet my host family “The Bucks”. They were everything a player could ask for. They really made it feel like Tim (Elko) and I were a part of their family. I can’t thank them enough for everything they did for us.
3) How did the Northwoods League experience help you grow as a player?
The Northwoods League was a great test for me as a player. I had been dealing with an arm injury that forced me to serve in a limited role this past spring at school. Playing everyday really helped me get back on my feet and made me feel more comfortable with each aspect of the game. The league is also a great test of your durability as a player (playing 72 games in a short amount of time). Playing in Fondy really helped me learn how to play on the days when my body and mind was tired.
4) How was your Fall Ball season? What are your expectations for your college team this season?
I accomplished a lot this fall. I feel like the work I’ve put in will really help me make a jump this spring. This year our team at Jacksonville looks very strong. We lost 12 guys from last year’s team but we’ve added some very talented junior college guys. We also have a freshman class that I’m sure will play a big role for us this spring. Our expectations are to win the ASUN Conference and set ourselves up for a run in the post-season.
5) What advice would you provide future players who are coming to play for the Dock Spiders and in the Northwoods League?
My advice is to embrace the process. The biggest thing about the Northwoods League other than the competition is the mental grind of playing everyday. As long as you take on each day, one day at a time, you’ll be able to work though struggles and lengthen the successes of competing everyday.
6) What is your long-term goal after college?
My goals are first and foremost to pursue a career in professional baseball. If that doesn’t work out then I plan on applying for graduate school to get my master’s degree.
