La Crosse, Wis. – The La Crosse Loggers open their 2014 campaign in just 28 days and today they bolstered their roster when team officials announced the signings of freshman Brody Weiss (UC-Santa Barbara) and red-shirt sophomore Marc Frazier (Nicholls State).
Brody Weiss was tabbed as the No. 68 freshman prospect in the nation entering the 2014 season by Perfect Game, but will red-shirt this spring as he recovers from an injury in time to take the field this summer in the Northwoods League. Weiss, a 6-2, 180 pound shortstop, was drafted out of Regis Jesuit High School (Colo.) in the 22nd round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies. Brody’s father, Walt, is the current field manager of the Colorado Rockies and he also enjoyed a 14-year major league career with Oakland, Florida, Colorado and Atlanta. During his career, Walt captured the 1988 American League Rookie of the Year Award and was named a MLB All-Star in 1998.
Marc Frazier is in the midst of his first season at Nicholls State, the current leaders of the Southland Conference. A two-way threat, the right-handed throwing Frazier has excelled on the mound for the Colonels having posted a 1.54 ERA over eight appearances while striking out seven batters in 11.2 innings of work. Frazier has also accumulated a .222 batting average with one home run and seven RBI’s while swinging from the left side. Prior to Nicholls State, Frazier was also a two-way talent for Chipola Junior College (Fla.). The Newman, Ga. native was also a record-setter in high school as he still holds the Georgia high school all-time leading batting average of .552 set in 2009. That production garnered interest from professional baseball as Frazier was selected in the 47th round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants before electing to play college baseball.
